Stacking: ATK Down | DEF Down


A list of status effect and explanations. Some icons are used to represent multiple different statuses. In general, if two effects have different icons and effect names, they can be used simultaneously for greater effect.

Buffs and debuffs that are the exact same effect will typically replace or overwrite each other. When using Fighter's Rage I and Warrior's Rage II at the same time, Rage II will overwrite an existing Rage I, but Rage I will have no effect on an existing Rage II. Using Rage II again will simply overwrite the old Rage II effect. However, some skills are what is colloquially known a "dual skill," which cause effects that stack with other non-dual (single) effects. The best example of this is Dark Fencer's Miserable Mist, which stacks with Sidewinder's Rain of Arrows III, causing enemies to reach the maximum Attack Lowered value of -50%.

Buffs and debuffs with "(stackable)" in the name will increase in effect every time they are applied as the name implies, up to a certain limit, while also returning to the original duration, if applicable. Bounty works the same way, although it also becomes harder to add more stacks the higher it already is.

The duration of most status effects is either expressed in battle turns or seconds of real time. For the most part, effects on the player's party have a turn-based duration while effects on enemies are time-based. Exceptions to the latter usually have an icon with a number displaying the remaining number of turns and tend to be what's often called a "local" effect.

Certain status effects are classified as "special buffs", which are indicated by their skill descriptions in-game, and the status infobox in the wiki.
Most special buffs have an icon unique to a specific character and their character versions, such as ColHP is restored on every turn / DEF is boosted

Special buffs can be active at the same time as regular buffs, applying normal stacking rules (e.g. additive for normal modifier ATK buffs).
Special buffs can be active at the same time as other special buffs, but only the stats with the highest value will apply.[1][2]
  • Debuffs

  • Dual and Single
Used to indicated whether (de)buffs sourced from character skills stack with each other.
This terminology was used due to skills that buff/debuff one attribute (Single), were able to stack with skills that buff/debuff two attributes (Dual).
While this is frequently the case, many exceptions exist now and these terms are currently only used to indicate stacking possibilities.
  • Source
Refers to the source of an effect. Most common sources are Skill, Support Skill, C.A, Summon Call, Summon Aura. Source often, but not always, plays a role in effect stacking.
Skill refers to Main Character's and other allies' skills.
Support Skill refers to a character's passive ability.
C.A. refers to Charge Attack of characters or weapons.
Summon Call refers to effects taking place after summon has been summoned.
Summon Aura refers to passive effects granted by a summon.
  • Side
Used to explain how effects stacks with each other.
Generally, only one effect of the same side can be active at a time. Stronger effects overwrite weaker ones and if you try to apply a weaker effect, while a stronger one is active, you'll get a "NO EFFECT" message.
Equally strong effects of the same stacking side will overwrite each other and the duration will be overwritten too (not extended).
  • Local
Refers to enemy buffs and debuffs that are exclusive to a player's fight such as Ultimate Bahamut's Ruination RayDeals 3-hit plain DMG to an ally each turn
or Grea's DracoforceUnder Grea's sway
Local status effect
Local effects are signified by having a diamond-shaped status icon rather than a circle shape.

  • Half Turns
Some buffs or debuffs on this wiki may have a listed duration of x.5 Turns.
These are applied during the attack phaseThe phase that is immediately after pressing the Attack button of a turn and only affect allies and/or enemies who perform their attack after gaining the effect.
Refresh and turn-based damage applied during the attack phase which have their effect on the turn transition are also labeled as x.5 Turns.
For example, a status with the duration of 1.5 turns is technically 2 turns in the game, but this initial duration cannot be normally seen by players. Status durations still count down by 1 at the end of the turn even when applied during the attack phase.

  • Abilities that "boost multiattack rate" apply two buffs, a DA Up and a TA Up, and therefore can overwrite/be overwritten by single DA Up or TA Up effects from the same type of source

(ex. Using Sky Realm Song after Amira's Bal Sagoth will overwrite its DA Up buff).

Critical Hit Rate Boosted

DMG is slightly boosted for critical hits.

Critical Hit is a damage mechanic that increases DMG dealt by a fixed percentage when activated. Normally, Critical Hits only activate for elemental attacks when superior element, or against non-elemental enemies. Some character skills or field effects, however, can allow for critical hits to be dealt regardless of element.

Critical Hits have a fixed chance to activate, and a damage modifier. They do not boost DMG Cap, but certain weapons and skills give additional effects when a Critical Hit is activated.

Counter

Counter is a status effect that allows a character to deal damage to an enemy at the end of its action if certain requirements are met.
The character will counter for their listed times per turn.

Counter can be applied as a buff through Skills and Charge Attacks, which typically lasts for a certain number of turns.
Counter can also be permanently active through Weapon Skills, Support Skills, and Extended Mastery Support Skills. However, these don't take effect while the status effect is granted.

There are three different types of Counter:

  • Counters on DMGCounters upon taking DMG
    Counter attacks grant 5% charge bar per hit.
    (also called Tank-and-Counter): Deals counterattacks upon taking non-plain DMG.
    • The character won't counter if the attack was dodged or missed.
    • It activates not only against normal attacks but special attacks and all-ally attacks as well.
  • Counters on DodgeDodge and counter one-ally attacks
    Counter attacks grant 5% charge bar per hit.
    (also called Dodge-and-Counter): Dodges foe's normal attacks and deals counterattacks afterwards.
    • It activates even when the foe's attacks miss due to status effects such as Blind.
    • It won't activate against special attacks and all-ally attacks.
  • Counters on Dodge/DMGCounters upon dodging one-ally attacks or taking DMG
    Counter attacks grant 5% charge bar per hit.
    (also called Dodge/Tank-and-Counter): Dodges and counters normal attacks; tanks and counters special attacks and all-ally attacks.
    • This effect is prioritized over any other Counter effects.

Drain

Amount healed is based on a percentage of damage dealt, typically up to a certain HP cap. The amount and its cap varies based on the Drain source.

Element DMG Lowered

Reduces damage taken from specified element by a percentage.

  • Hype can grant up to an initial 4 stacks if the target does not have any existing Hype stacks. Any source that can grant Hype has this characteristic. Initial Hype chances are weighted more towards lower stack levels.
  • If a target already has 1 to 3 stacks of Hype, applying another Hype source will only increase the stack by 1.
  • If Hype with a longer turn duration is granted, it will overwrite the duration of an existing Hype.
  • Conversely, if Hype with a shorter turn duration is granted, it will not overwrite the duration of an existing Hype.

Veil

Immune to debuffs.
Lasts until it resists at least 1 debuff.

Veil is a buff that grants immunity to the next debuff that would be inflicted.
It may resist multiple debuffs if they are all inflicted at once.

Substitute

Substitute is a buff that causes a character to receive one-ally attacks in the place of an ally.
Regular Substitute works on attacks with multiple hits, but not attacks that hit all allies. Substitute (All-Ally), however, covers for all allies. For a list of all substitute skills see the substitute page.

Assassin (Buff)

Assassin buffs refers to buffs which boost the ATK and DMG cap of the character such as Defiance ("Overdrive Assassin") or Salted Wound ("Break Assassin").

Crests

Crests are special buffs which are used by certain characters' skills or support skills. Their effect varies from character to character. The crest buffs are permanent, can stack up to five times, and cannot be dispelled, though they can be consumed by skills. If no characters who utilize Crests are in the party, they have no effect.

Death's Grace

Converting turn-based DMG to HP recovery (Poison, burn, wither etc.)

Death's Grace converts damage dealt by most turn-based damage effects (PoisonedHP is lowered on every turn
, BurnedHP is lowered on every turn
, etc) into HP recovery.

HP recovered is equal to the damage that would have been dealt and is unaffected by effects that increase healing. It also bypasses effects that prevent healing.

Debuffs

Debuffs are status effects that are generally considered detrimental to the afflicted.

When attempting to inflict debuffs on enemies, there is a natural success rate based on the element of the character with the skill and the enemy. Strong element has the highest natural success rate (but not 100%), followed by neutral elements, then weak element, and last, same element. To reiterate, the same element as the enemy has the lowest debuff success rate of all elements. If inflicting debuffs with Dark Fencer is important to your overall strategy, the overwhelming recommendation is to use a strong-element main hand regardless of whether you get weapon/summon bonuses or not.

Self-inflicted debuffs from abilities generally cannot fail and are not preventable by Veil.

Some enemies (mostly bosses) are completely immune to some debuffs (indicated by "Resist" when using them) and grow increasingly more resistant to other debuffs the more they are used on them.


ATK Down

ATK DownATK is lowered
reduces Attack of a foe it's applied on, effectively reducing damage taken by your party.

  • Normal ATK DownATK is lowered
    effects from different sources (Skill Single / Skill Dual / Character C.A. / Summon Call) are additive and cap at 50%.

Multiple effects of the same side can't be applied at the same time. Stronger effects will overwrite weaker ones and weaker effects will show "NO EFFECT". Equally strong effect will override the duration (not extend it).
