The Reckless Ronin[edit]
While on a mission to clear a mountain of bandits, (Captain) and the crew meet Sevilbarra, who has the same goal. They finish the job, but (Captain) refuses to accept a reward from the village until it recovers. Sevilbarra is impressed by this and asks to join the crew.
(Captain) and the crew push into the mountains to rescue a village from bandits that have been plaguing it.
While searching deep in the mountains for the bandit stronghold, they discover a Harvin man confronting some bandits.
???: Hey there! Have you guys heard anything about a long sword known as a demon blade?
Bandit: You think you're in any position to ask questions? Get him, guys!
???: Have it your way then...
Lyria: Oh no! They've got that man surrounded! We have to help him, (Captain)!
(Captain) and the others rush forward to save the man from the bandits.
Bandit: You're going down!
???: Ha! I'm not the one who's going down!
Bandit: Argh! Retreat for now!
The man cuts down one bandit after another until they're finally forced to flee.
Vyrn: That was awesome! That straw hat guy is crazy strong!
???: And who might you be? You don't look like bandits.
(Captain) and the others explain that they're skyfarers who came to catch the bandits at the request of the villagers.
Lyria: So you shouldn't wander around here by yourself. There are lots of bandits in these mountains.
???: Ha-ha... I see. So you're bounty hunters too!
???: Looks like these bandits are just causing trouble everywhere.
The man says that a town other than the one that hired (Captain)'s crew has offered a reward for capturing the bandits, and he has his eyes on it.
Vyrn: Really? Then if we're after the same thing, why not work together?
???: No... There's something I need to do on my own. Sorry, but I'll be going on without you.
Almost as soon as the words are out of his mouth, the Harvin man disappears further into the mountains.
Lyria: You know... that man was smiling, but his eyes were so very cold.
Lyria: Let's go after him, (Captain)! He really could get into trouble without backup.
The crew reaches the cave where the bandits are hiding out.
???: Take that!
The Harvin man is already involved in a scuffle with the bandits.
???: Whew... So it wasn't these guys either. You just can't rely on rumors.
Bandit: I'll teach you!
A bandit attempts to attack the man from his blind spot.
Lyria: Look out!
(Captain) takes down the bandit just in time to save the stranger.
???: You're the guys from earlier... Good thing you showed up!
???: Now how about helping me deal with the rest of these villains since you're here?
The man and the crew work together to take down the bandits one by one.
The Harvin raises his sword to deal a finishing blow to a fallen bandit.
Bandit: No!
Choose: That's enough!
???: You think some filthy bandit deserves compassion?
???: Heh... That's the face of someone who stands their ground. Have it your way then.
Choose: What's wrong with you?
(Captain) cries out without thinking, and the man stops.
???: You don't want me to dirty my hands? The stain wouldn't even be yours to bear... Interesting. I like that look in your eyes.
???: All right then! For you, I'll stay my blade.
Continue 1(Captain)'s crew works with the stranger to capture the bandits and turn them in to the authorities.
The man goes off to town to claim his reward. The crew sees him off and then heads back to the village.
Village Chief: Thank you so much! Now we'll be able to make it through the winter.
Village Chief: I'm just sorry this is all we can offer you for all your hard work...
The village chief offers the crew some money, but (Captain) won't accept it.
Village Chief: Oh? We can thank you after we've rebuilt the village? But... you've done so much for us...
Vyrn: Heh-heh! We really don't mind! And we'll be back once the place is fixed up!
The tearful chief and villagers hate to see them go, but (Captain) and company head back to the airship.
???: I can't believe what a bunch of saps you are.
Lyria: Huh? It's you again!
Sevilbarra: Right... I haven't introduced myself. The name's Sevilbarra.
Lyria: Oh! We haven't either! I'm Lyria, this is (Captain), and that's Vyrn!
Lyria: Do you need something, Mr. Sevilbarra?
Sevilbarra: Well, I've always been a little curious about skyfaring, but I haven't been able to find a good crew.
Sevilbarra: Not until now anyway. You guys seem like a good bunch!
Sevilbarra: I don't suppose you'd let me join you?
Vyrn: Ha-ha! We saw how strong you are! Of course you're welcome! Right, (Captain)?
Sevilbarra: I owe you one! And if you can travel long distances, I think I can finish a personal goal of mine too.
Sevilbarra: (A goal of revenge, that is...)
Thus Sevilbarra is welcomed to the crew by (Captain) and the others. But something unexpected happens later that night.
Bandit: Damn it... Thanks to them, all my buddies got caught! I'll make them pay dearly!
A resentful bandit sneaks toward the airship while everyone is asleep.
Bandit: Oof!
Sevilbarra: For cryin' out loud... I knew the captain was too soft. There's always one.
Sevilbarra: But I suppose it's the grown-ups' job to do the dirty work.
Sevilbarra smiles quietly as he wipes the blood from his sword and then returns to the ship.
(Captain) and the others still know nothing of the darkness hidden behind this roaming warrior's cheer or what he intends to use his blade for.
Fate in the Demon Blade[edit]
Airships carrying Knickknack Shack goods are attacked by a powerful gang of thieves, so (Captain) and the crew agree to transport the goods and hopefully capture the villains. Sevilbarra seems to know something about the unusual sword carried by the thieves' leader.
The crew visits the Knickknack Shack in search of work.
There they find Sierokarte in a very somber mood.
Vyrn: What's the matter? You look really serious...
Sierokarte: Well... a crew of thieves is plaguing the sky, and they keep going after ships carrying my goods.
Sierokarte: Supplies are getting stolen, people are getting hurt, and the other merchants and I just don't know what to do.
Sevilbarra: That sounds terrible. I bet they have guards too, if they're carrying precious cargo.
Sierokarte: Sure... But I hear the thieves' leader has an unusual sword and the strength to wield it.
Sevilbarra: An unusual sword? What kind of sword?
Sierokarte: Um... I'm terribly sorry, but that's all I know.
Sevilbarra: I see.
Sierokarte: Those goods should have gone to my customers, so I'm hoping you can take some replacements to them...
Vyrn: Leave it to us! It sounds like a piece of apple cake!
Sierokarte: Thank you so much! I knew I could count on you guys!
Sierokarte: But do be careful if you run into those thieves. I'd be thrilled if they got caught of course...
Lyria: We'll stay safe! I promise! Let's go, (Captain)!
Sevilbarra: ...
Vyrn: What's wrong? If you keep sitting there, you'll get left behind!
Sevilbarra: Right! Sorry... I'm coming!
Sevilbarra: (A man with an unusual sword... Could it really be him this time?)
The crew accepts the goods from Sierokarte and departs on the airship.
Fate in the Demon Blade: Scene 2[edit]
Sevilbarra tells (Captain) that the man with the sword might be who he's pursuing, but an airship crashes into the Grandcypher from behind before he can elaborate, and thieves rush aboard. They fight back to save their ship.
Everything seems to be going well as (Captain) and the crew approach their destination.
While watching for monsters from the deck, (Captain) comes across Sevilbarra standing off to one side by himself.
Sevilbarra: Huh? Oh, it's you.
Sevilbarra: Not that I have anything to report...
Sevilbarra: What's that? You think I'm acting strange? Heh-heh... Maybe I am.
Sevilbarra: So you noticed I haven't really been myself since I heard about the man with the unusual sword?
Sevilbarra: To be honest, that man might be an enemy from my past...
(Captain) gets ready to listen as Sevilbarra starts opening up about his past for the first time.
But before Sevilbarra can say another word, an airship rushes toward them from behind.
Sevilbarra: Wha? They're going to crash right into us!
The airships collide, and the impact sends (Captain) tumbling to the deck.
Sevilbarra: Are you all right, (Captain)? What's going on here?
As Sevilbarra helps (Captain) get up, men from the other ship pile onboard.
Thief Crew Member: Damn it... What's wrong with that guy? We'll just have to commandeer this ship instead!
Sevilbarra: Commandeer? That doesn't sound very nice. I think it's time to rake you over the coals.
Thief Crew Member: Shut up! We got no other choice... Men! Take these guys out and claim this ship!
Sevilbarra: Oh well... Looks like the man with the unusual sword isn't with this bunch.
Sevilbarra: But we still have to deal with this cannon fodder. Let's go, (Captain)!
Fate in the Demon Blade: Scene 3[edit]
After the thieves' ship makes an emergency landing, the young Harvin Krelkulkil emerges. He was engaged to Sevilbarra's sister and seeks the same revenge. Once he leaves, Sevilbarra tells the crew that he seeks to avenge his sister's murder and to destroy the stolen sword that caused her death.
Thief Crew Member: Argh! What the hell! These guys are crazy strong too...
Sevilbarra: What do you mean? Was there someone else?
Sevilbarra: Uh-oh! We're losing altitude because of that collision!
Sevilbarra: Ignore these thieves for now. We need to make an emergency landing!
Urged on by Sevilbarra, (Captain) rushes to the ship's bridge.
They make an emergency landing on a nearby island, and the other ship follows suit.
Lyria: Whew... I'm glad we made it. Are you okay, (Captain)?
Vyrn: What in the endless sky was going on with that other ship?
The moment Vyrn voices his concerns, a young Harvin man emerges from the other ship.
???: ...
He is holding a long sword too big for his body in one hand and dragging a large bedraggled man behind him with the other.
Thief Crew Member: Ugh! B-Boss! No... Even my sword's broken!
Krelkulkil: This isn't him either...
Muttering in annoyance, the young man pulls the large man forward and throws him on the ground.
As (Captain) eyes the young man warily, Sevilbarra steps between them.
Sevilbarra: Krelkulkil.
Krelkulkil: Sevilbarra!
Krelkulkil: So you've been looking for him too.
Sevilbarra: Yeah... But this was unfortunately another miss.
Sevilbarra tries to continue speaking to Krelkulkil, but the young man turns his back to him.
Krelkulkil: The rare flower has not yet bloomed. But some day I shall scatter its barren petals!
Spitting out the words like venom, Krelkulkil vanishes from sight.
Sevilbarra: Krelkulkil... There's nothing I can say to him now...
Seeing the self-derision in Sevilbarra's features in profile, (Captain) and the others hesitate to speak.
Sevilbarra: I'm sorry. I've gotten you mixed up in all of this, and I haven't even told you what's going on.
Lyria: Um... Sevilbarra? Who was that man?
Sevilbarra: His name is Krelkulkil. We're both after the same enemy.
Lyria: An enemy?
Sevilbarra: I'm the heir to an ancient school of swordsmanship.
Sevilbarra: Our school involves wielding demon blades, which hold great power but drive those who wield them to madness.
Sevilbarra: The school's goal was to provide the physical and mental training necessary to wield such blades safely.
Vyrn: Sounds terrifying... Was that what the guy earlier was carrying?
Sevilbarra: Yes. That was the demon blade kept by Krelkulkil's family.
Sevilbarra: Special sorcery has been handed down through his family that seals away the blade's power. That's how they kept their sword through the generations.
Sevilbarra: Over the years our school has dwindled in number. We weren't sure if we would find a successor.
Sevilbarra: So my younger sister was betrothed to Krelkulkil, and our Demon Blade would have been entrusted to his family.
Vyrn: Huh? Betrothed? As in marriage? So that guy was your brother-in-law!
Sevilbarra: Yes... He was supposed to be anyway.
Sevilbarra: But then a man attacked my sister's bridal procession. He was after the blade. All my relatives were killed.
Sevilbarra: Even my sister... She had looked so happy until that morning... when her bridal gown was stained with blood!
Lyria: That's terrible... It's just too cruel!
Sevilbarra: I'm ashamed to say that I got badly hurt in the attack, and he stole the demon blade right out from under me.
Sevilbarra: Krelkulkil lifted the seal on his family's demon blade and took it to chase after the man, my sworn enemy.
Sevilbarra: Once I was all healed up, I left my hometown in search of him just like Krelkulkil.
(Captain) and the others are at a loss for words after hearing the gruesome story of Sevilbarra's past.
Sevilbarra: If it weren't for that demon blade, none of this would've happened...
Sevilbarra: That's why I've made it my mission to break the sword in two.
Sevilbarra: Then I can finally stand before my clan's grave!
Sevilbarra's resolve is unshakable, the result of firm determination hardened by anger and hatred.
Two men, bereft of the ones they love, walk the path of revenge. To what conclusion will it lead them?
All (Captain) can do for now is watch as Sevilbarra's fate unfolds.
