La lingüística abarca y estudia todos los aspectos relacionados al lenguaje, teniéndose —entre otras— las siguientes subdisciplinas¹:

• Lingüística general: la parte de la lingüística que estudia de manera teórica los métodos de investigación y los tópicos comunes de las leyes que rigen el lenguaje humano.

• Lingüística aplicada: la parte que aplica los conocimientos de la lingüística a las necesidades de la sociedad, tal como la enseñanza de lenguas, el reconocimiento automático del habla, etc.

• Lingüística evolutiva o diacrónica: la parte que estudia los cambios y transformaciones sufridos por una lengua a través del tiempo.

• Lingüística descriptiva o sincrónica: la parte que estudia el estado de una lengua en un momento determinado de su historia.

Linguistics studies all the topics related to the human language, having —among others— the following sub-fields ²:
