Edge of the Empire is Fantasy Flight Games' initial entry in their license of the property. This is the first in a trilogy of games which include Age of Rebellion and Force and Destiny. Each game focuses on a specific aspect of life in the Star Wars galaxy.

Edge of the Empire (EotE) and its sister games utilize the same mechanics, with each game written from a perspective and with support material focused on a particular aspect of the game universe. EotE imagines that the characters will be outcasts trying to survive on the fringes of the galaxy, in the Outer Rim and beyond, tied to each other and the lawless civilizations clinging to the edges of the Empire with bonds of Obligation.

Presenting a licensed Star Wars roleplaying game has been undertaken in the past by West End Games, and Wizards of the Coast. The current license holder is Fantasy Flight Games.

The game builds on the narrative dice pool mechanic developed for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying, 3rd Edition, which foregoes numerically marked dice for the use of symbols which produce results where degrees of success can be obtained, and tempered by degrees of threat and advantage.
