Hostility is the game mechanic which determines the probability that any given character in your party is targeted by an enemy. Every character has the same base chance to get attacked, but this can be modified by character abilities that grant Hostility UpMore likely to be attacked
or Hostility DownLess likely to be attacked
. It can also be affected by support skills, character EMP, and weapon skills.
Hostility is ignored when any ally has SubstituteReceives foe attack in place of an ally
(Excludes all-foe all-ally attacks)
.

Hostility Formula

Every character has a base hostility score of 10. A character's chance to get hit is their hostility score over the party's sum total hostility score. Therefore, the base chance that any given character is targeted is:[1]

10/(10 + 10 + 10 + 10) * 100% = 25%

Hostility modifiers act upon each character's hostility score. The sum of the hostility score can't be reduced to 0. Consider the scenario where one character has their hostility score boosted by 10. The chance that this character will be targeted is:

(10+10)/(10 + 10 + 10 + (10 + 10)) * 100% = 40%


Special Hostility

Some hostility buffs allow affected allies to either be always targeted or not targeted at all. The special hostility rule works as follows:

  • For 100% hostility (Full Hostility100% chance to be targeted by one-ally attacks
    Full hostility has the same properties as Substitute, but has lower targeting priority than Substitute
    ), hostility rule is ignored and always targets affected ally. The buff behaves exactly like SubstituteReceives foe attack in place of an ally
    (Excludes all-foe all-ally attacks)
    but with lower priority. The affected ally always receive one-ally attacks and receives foe's charge attacks which target specific allies (e.g. Iblis in Lucilius (Raid)) in place of targeted ally.
    • If there are multiple allies affected with this buff, only the ally in the highest slot will receive one-ally attacks and charge attacks, similar to interactions with multiple SubstituteReceives foe attack in place of an ally
      (Excludes all-foe all-ally attacks)
      effects.
  • For 0% hostility (Into HidingLess likely to be attacked
    , ScurryLess likely to be attacked
    , and similar buffs), the ally's hostility value is forced to set to 0. The affected ally will not receive one-ally attacks. This doesn't prevent the affected ally to receive charge attacks which targets a specific ally.
    • When all allies have either status effects or support skills preventing them to be targetted, ally in the highest slot will receive one-ally attacks and charge attacks.
