While trying to match up my terminal's colour palette and GVim's I noticed this:
- When I open GVim and Vim, I see:
(That's the same file, my vimrc.) - If I do
:set t_Co=256, nothing happens in GVim (except it blinks), whereas the colours in the terminal now look different. If I do:set bg=darknow, it makes no difference (again GVim blinks). If I then do:set bg=lightand then:set bg=darkagain, I get:
Both :set bg=dark and :set t_Co=256 are present in my vimrc. Why aren't my :set bg and :set t_Co sticking, and why does setting :set bg=dark again after :set bg=light make a difference where it originally didn't?
I'm using Arch Linux, the terminal is GNOME Terminal, and I don't have a .gvimrc.

bgtodark, why does its appearance change if I set it tolightand back again? Note that my vimrc does not doset bg=light. – muru Feb 18 '15 at 08:23set bgchanges the colors and attributes of some highlight groups so that they work better on dark or light background. It is mostly arbitrary and may or may not have an effect depending on the colorscheme you use. Messing with that option is not a good idea. – romainl Feb 18 '15 at 09:20bgandt_Co. I'm just wondering why elflord'sset bg=darkand mine cause such differing (yet repeatable) results? – muru Feb 18 '15 at 09:24
