Which effects should I place on return tracks?

What are the accepted practices/rules about putting effects on return tracks? I tend to stick time-based effects (reverb, delay) on a return, and keep other effects (chorus, phaser, waveshaper etc.) as an insert. Am I going about this the wrong way?
