Metagaming is when players use their own knowledge that the character wouldn't be expected to have.

In some circumstances this can be problematic, such as when players read a game's "monster book" to give their characters an edge in combat. In other circumstances this may be a normal part of functional play, such as when a player uses a "luck point" to invoke a rule that lets them have their character suddenly enter a scene at a convenient moment.
