読み. The reading of a kanji character or a word written in kanji characters refers to how it is “read” in terms of kana characters. Please use this tag rather than 'pronunciation' if it fits your question.

The reading (読み) of a kanji character or a word written in kanji characters refers to how it is “read” in terms of kana characters. For example, kanji character 日 has two common readings にち and ひ.

There are two kinds of readings of a kanji character: on readings (音読み) and kun readings (訓読み). On readings are derived from Chinese pronunciations at some point in history, and kun readings are native Japanese words corresponding to the meaning of the kanji characters. In the above example, にち is an on reading and ひ is a kun reading of kanji character 日. Most kanji characters have at least one on reading and at least one kun reading.

I came across a N1 vocab list and came across 魂 with the reading as こん, and I had known that as たましい. I know is one is 'on' and one is 'kun', but if it's just by itself I was under the impression that it's read たましい. Does anyone know definitively?

I noticed the rare reading of メン contained in the word 雌鳥{めんどり} and I wondered how this unusual reading could have come about. I am not aware of any other words which use this reading for 雌. Is it simply that めんどり is easier to say than めすとり or めすどり…
