If there are no female party members present (including the Main Character), this skill will completely miss.

Lowain's unique Substitute will draw enemy attacks from Katalina to himself. Any version of Katalina is applicable for this skill, which includes Katalina (Summer) and Katalina (SSR). It also works for Lady Katapillar and Vira.
If Katalina is not in the front line, Lowain will not gain Substitute. He will still gain DEF Up regardless.
