A driving licence, driver's license, driving permit (or other names depending on the country) is a document which certifies that a person is authorized to operate one or more types of motor vehicle on public roads. It is usually issued by a government and is often used as a form of identification.
Most governments will allow a visitor who is licensed in his or her home country to operate the same types of vehicle within their jurisdiction; however, the laws and their enforcement vary considerably, and many require long-term visitors and immigrants to acquire a new license.
A document known as the International Driving Permit is not a permit in and of itself, but provides standardized translations of a licence, enabling it to be more widely accepted in countries which are signatories to the international Convention on Road Traffic.
