1Chelsea won the Champions League and thus qualified for the group stage as defending champions, forfeited their spot in the Europa League as FA Cup winners. This meant that Tottenham were to compete in the Europa League group stage, since, pursuant to the rules in effect at the time, only four clubs from the Premier League could play in the Champions League. Fifth-placed Newcastle United, who originally participated directly in the group stage, were pushed one round back.
2Liverpool won the League Cup and thus qualified for the Europa League third qualifying round.
