A question in my survey asks about the age of respondents. Respondents are asked to choose one of these four ranges:
18-29 30-49 50-64 65 and over
How can I calculate the average age of respondents?

1Since it's your survey, why don't you change it to ask the age to the nearest year (or even more precisely)? – whuber Jun 06 '16 at 20:36

2@gung I understand that--but the question still needs to be asked. Pondering the answer, and why we might ask for a range of ages, suggests some effective solutions. In particular, it points to the (strong) advisability of not having any lengthy open-ended bins! It also can suggest creative solutions, such as handing the subject a die and asking them to roll it (privately) and add its value to their age. That would be far more precise than using these wide bins. – whuber Jun 06 '16 at 20:46
