I've been struggling for many weeks now setting up my Eclipse. For some reason, it doesn't use the code assistant (although it's turned on), it has a huge delay (typing something, nothing appears and after a few seconds, the whole sentence appears) and saving, loading, launching,... it all goes extremely slow.

Maybe there is a plugin I'm missing or some settings are set wrong. Is there anyone who can tell me what the ideal settings for PHP development are in Eclipse?

EDIT This is the version I use:

  • Ok, what do you suggest? – Michiel Jan 31 '12 at 10:47
  • Are you using the PDT version? http://www.eclipse.org/projects/project.php?id=tools.pdt – Dan Blows Jan 31 '12 at 10:48

This question is rapidly turning into "What PHP editor should I use?", which has been done to death. e.g. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/116292/what-is-the-best-ide-for-php Eclipse PDT is fine for PHP, as is Netbeans, Zend, Aptana, etc. – Dan Blows Jan 31 '12 at 10:50
  • I don't have Eclipse running, but I think it's in Help->About. Alternatively, just download it again from that link. Even if you are using PDT, maybe this will fix the issue. – Dan Blows Jan 31 '12 at 10:51
  • @Blowski, I'm bound to Eclipse due to my company... See my edit for the version I'm using – Michiel Jan 31 '12 at 10:52
  • Sounds like it's the right version. Reinstall Eclipse and Java, see if that makes a difference. There are no additional plugins you need to install, and no settings you need to change. – Dan Blows Jan 31 '12 at 10:58
  • we cannot debug your Eclipse configuration here. If you encounter any problem with Eclipse, please ask on their mailing list. The question @Blowski linked you to is the most comprehensive there is on SO. It contains all the major PHP plugins for Eclipse in addition to the others. Please see that one instead and also http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6166/any-good-php-ide-preferably-free-or-cheap – Gordon Jan 31 '12 at 10:58
  • Ok, thanks for the answer. I'll try this whenever I can and I'll be in touch! Thanks again! – Michiel Jan 31 '12 at 10:59

The PHP tools for Eclipse are nice, but if you want to get the most out of PHP with Eclipse you should look at Aptana Studio 3. Best PHP code completion and integration I've found.

I use Zend Studio (based on eclipse) and I'm happy. It's made by the same team that's behind PHP.

It is however a bit slow when working on remote files (even Samba on local network) so I ended up installing the free Zend Server Community Edition aswell.

I tried Eclipse PDT before but had a hard time configuring stuff, with Zend Studio + Server you get it all preconfigured and are up and running with break point-debugging in no time.
