echo $(cat file)
if the file is short.
awk '{printf("%s ",$0)}' <file
if you want awk or similar.

paste -sd\ infile
Note that the above command contains two white space characters (an escaped and a plain one).

Do I have to? I usually put `%s` and other stuff when I need formatting. I use `printf` mostly to kill the `newline`. May be there is something to it that I am not aware. – jaypal singh Dec 02 '11 at 19:55

1I mean, if the file contains `'%s'`, then it will be interpreted as a format string and will error out. I also used `printf` to kill the newline, but differently (see my answer). – Michael Krelin - hacker Dec 02 '11 at 19:57
