Questions about "how does this work" are usually too broad, because we don't have a way to know why you don't understand the question already. Questions about "why does it have to be this way" can [also be problematic](https://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/323005/are-why-questions-allowed). Finally: if you have a question about code that someone else wrote, please start by asking *the author* - nobody else is more qualified to explain the thought process behind the code, than the person who actually had that thought process.
