I have encountered a problem on several websites. When I use hyphens: manual and insert the HTML tag, the hyphenation does work. But instead of a hyphens dash a question mark box appears. I use several fonts and they all do this.

The problem only occurs in Chrome, the current font is "Metronic Italic". I've tried as well, does not work either. I use Mac. I suppose it is a browser problem, since hyphens: auto does not work as well.

  • Which browsers have you tried with? Have you tried `` instead? Related: [Soft hyphen in HTML ( vs. )](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/226464/soft-hyphen-in-html-wbr-vs-shy) – Andrew Morton Dec 14 '21 at 12:57
  • I have the same issue, but only in Chrome. Do you experience the same thing with Firefox? – joho Dec 14 '21 at 13:30
  • I cannot reproduce this problem &shy is working fine on Windows 10 using Edge, Chrome or Firefox. Could you put the code that is causing the problem into your question, check that it does indeed cause the problem, and state what OS/browser you are using. – A Haworth Dec 15 '21 at 01:05
