What does !function(...){...} mean in JavaScript?

I have tried searching for information about this simple question but unfortunately, because all search engines I know of ignore all special characters and punctuation, I have found no results. Can someone please quickly explain to me what !function does in JavaScript?

And more generally, is there a place I can go to search for more questions about symbols in the future without posting a question to Stack Overflow?
