I have a kiosk that should play a video from a file. I only want the video player (such as VLC) to be able to play this video, and not anybody entering the system. So if anybody copied it from the computer, they should not be able to read this file.

How do i secure the files and only allow the video player to play it?

  • Vlc will not play an encrypted file. Your option is to encrypt the file when it is placed on the system, then unencrypt a copy to a protected temporary area and play that. This method comes with security drawbacks which aren't insurmountable but it does carry the time cost of having to unencrypt the file before playing. That can be overcome by retaining the unencrypted copy in the protected /tmp area. As you might have guessed by now, it can all get a bit fraught. Which ever way you choose, there are overheads and there's no way to avoid someone recording the video playing on their screen. – Rolf of Saxony Oct 10 '21 at 06:57
