I'm working on a podcast app that allows the user to play and download podcasts. I was thinking of having a setting to allow downloading over metered network, but after thinking about it, doesn't the phone OS have a built-in option to permit/deny apps from downloading over the mobile network? I know Galaxy does, but don't know about any others.

How would I be able to override the OS setting, and is this something I should even be worried about?

From a Ux stance, it'd be good to have the option right there in the app, where the user can easily find it, but anyone who's concerned enough to look for such a setting would probably already have their OS set to restrict downloading over mobile.

What's considered a good practice for this?

  • AFAIK, there is no restriction from the Android OS when you download from mobile network, assume you have all the correct permissions. If you want to improve your UX and warn user before download a big file, you check it yourself.
