Why are variables in python "if name == "main" global?

I just realized, that my variables declared in

if __name__ == "__main__":
    thisisglobal = "global variable"

are actually global. Why is this?

Because they're not in a function. What else would you expect them to be? – khelwood Jun 05 '21 at 07:25
