The site I am visiting, using chromedriver, often has scripts that automatically open one or more tabs or browser Windows. How could I prevent this from happening?

Might want to look into JavascriptExecutor so you can manipulate the page/DOM itself. You might be able to disable some of that functionality. https://stackoverflow.com/questions/35922259/modify-innerhtml-using-selenium – Aaron Oct 12 '18 at 01:10
