How to programmatically determine if the app has been cracked or pirated?

A year ago I stumbled over a thread in a forum where people discussed techniques to check this. Can't find that anymore.

I'd like to either let the app crash or display a message to the user so his friends know that he's a poor guy, not beeing able to spend $1 for something he thinks is cool.

hard to remove the posts about your stolen app on warez sites but I used the DCMA to get the file removed from the download sites Info on what to do if your app is cracked/stolen jailbroken
