I have built a MS Word Custom Taskpane addin.

When this addin is enabled in a Word Application, the entire Word application does not shutdown when i attempt to close Word.

The Active Document will disappear, but Word remains open.

I then have to go into Task Manager and kill the process.

When my addin is disabled, Word shuts down fine.

How do I shut down MS Word while having my addin enabled?

Update: I open Word via OLE Automation

  • How did you start Word in the first place? 1) By double-clicking the icon? 2) By using OLE Automation? – MickyD Sep 25 '15 at 03:46
  • you can have a look on [Word Add-in keeps Word process alive](http://stackoverflow.com/questions/29978430/word-add-in-keeps-word-process-alive-when-document-is-embedded-via-ole) – Mohit S Sep 25 '15 at 03:48
  • Do you handle the event with the object that is referencing Word when you close the application? Is your Word object a private field that lives for the life time of the class (e.g. As long as the Add-In is open)? I'm not sure exactly what a Taskpane Add-In is, or the libraries you use, so it's hard to say. – Tyler StandishMan Sep 25 '15 at 03:49

  • If you run whatever is opening word with automation in release mode without a debugger attached does word still stay open? – Scott Chamberlain Sep 25 '15 at 04:51
