In Chrome, after a selection is performed by the user there is no extra visual sign that a selection is made. I mean after the selection is done, bg color-font color-size-family doesn't change for example.

If there are lots of select elements then it's useful to show the user that a selection is made. (my case)

I tried option:selected however this doesn't affect the outlook of select after it's selected and closed again.

I also tried select:after with content="✔" (tried to print a check mark) This effort did nothing.

How is this aim can be achieved by pure CSS?

  • I think your 1st comment was correct that is JS may be needed to achieve this in a cross browser way. Accepted answer in the question you informed me about didn't work for me. (http://jsfiddle.net/hk4s0ech/) regards. – Andre Chenier Oct 21 '14 at 16:41
