As the subject says. We all know that we can validate the characters in an email address to validate if it is a 'legal' address depending on various standards.

Is it possible to send an email that will be received by the recipients server, but not actually delivered in order to identify if it is a live email address?

I'm currently writing some Access VBA to send out frequent emails to third parties and need to be able to identify before emails go out, that they are going to a live address.

Before trying too hard... what will you do if the email is not valid? Isn't this the problem that every spammer on the planet would like to solve? – Floris Oct 07 '13 at 12:46

Adding to Floris' comment. Usually it is better to properly approach errors than to do workarounds for an all the time success story. – Elias Oct 07 '13 at 12:48
  • it's probably that you'll have to use telnet and dive into SMTP protocol specifications to archive it. – 4dmonster Oct 07 '13 at 12:51
