Recommended Fonts for Programming?

What font do you use when writing code?

Specifically, this font should be:

  • Freely available
  • Easily installable on multiple platforms (Linux, Mac, Win, etc.)
  • Easily installable on multiple platforms (emacs, Eclipse, vim, TextMate)

I currently use Lucida Typewriter, Bold, Size 12.

There should be a version of APL that uses wingdings only. – Nosredna Jun 22 '09 at 17:48

My bad, I was using the word "coding" in my searches, and I didn't see the "Recommended Fonts for Programming" question. – oneself Jun 22 '09 at 18:04
  • While this is a duplicate question to the ones mentioned, enough time has passed since the discussion and there are a plethora of new fonts out there designed specifically for programmers... This is a useful discussion, though I'm not sure that it belongs in the questions since there would be no definitive answer and only conjecture and opinion. Where (what forum?) IS the proper place for this discussion?? – Metagrapher Mar 20 '14 at 04:19

I like Consolas a lot. This top-10 list is a good resource for others. It includes examples and descriptions.

Funny, I was just researching this yesterday!

I personally use Monaco 10 or 11 for the Mac, but a good cross platform font would have to be Droid Sans Mono: http://damieng.com/blog/2007/11/14/droid-sans-mono-great-coding-font Or DejaVu sans mono is another great one (goes under a lot of different names, will be Menlo on SNow leopard and is really just a repackaged Prima/Vera) check it out here: Prima/Vera... Check it out here: http://dejavu-fonts.org/wiki/index.php?title=Download

Inconsolata (http://www.levien.com/type/myfonts/inconsolata.html) is a great monospaced font for programming. Earlier versions tend to act weird on OS X, but the newer versions work out very well.
