A GMPC or DMPC is a player character controlled by the Game Master (or Dungeon Master, in D&D). This tag is for questions primarily about GMPCs and issues related to them.
GMPCs are usually used when the party needs a role that existing player characters don't cover, the GM feels like the characters need guidance to follow the preplanned plot, or he just wanted to play a PC but needs to GM the game for some reason.
GMPCs are not inherently bad, but having a character that's the peer of the other characters and constantly travels with them played by somebody who already knows the plot and often protects it can easily result in a bad experience for the rest of the players.
This tag is for asking about:
- problems and other situations caused by the GM deciding to play a GMPC;
- techniques for not falling into problems while playing a GMPC;
- how this technique would work in a specific campaign, game, system or setting;
- other issues related to GMPCs
