What is poetry?

Poetry is the use of stylized writing and rhythm to evoke feeling beyond just the words said.

Different use of rhyming schemes, syllable counts and emphasis can all be used to create different forms of poetry. For example, a Haiku is a special type of poetry that is comprised of 3 lines with 5 syllables in the first line, 7 syllables in the second and 5 syllables again in the final line.

An example of a Haiku below:

This is a Haiku
Five seven five syllables
Exactly three lines

Another well-known type that focuses on emphasis and rhythm is iambic pentameter, which frequently appears in works of Shakespeare. An 'iamb' is a metrical foot that references a syllable stress pattern of one short unstressed syllable followed by a long stressed syllable and pentameter means the line consists of five metrical feet so in this case five iambs in a line.

An example of a verse written in iambic pentameter from Romeo and Juliet, with stressed syllables bolded:

Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
