A design patent is a special kind of patent that covers the ornamental design, as opposed to the workings, of a functional item.

A design patent covers the ornamental design, i.e. the look, of an object that can be put to a practical purpose. Design patents do not cover the functional design of the item; this can be separately protected by a regular patent.
