All of the middle and high school math educators I´ve encountered choose not to use LaTeX in preparing their documents or presentations. I would assume that most of them had to use the program in the past for their Bachelors or Masters programs. What are some reasons why it is not used before the undergraduate level?

  • They didn't have to before. 2. It's a pain if you are not familiar with it and some people don't like learning computer code-ish stuff. For instance, I don't use the formatting here and get fussed at all the time. 3. Be careful of extrapolating from yourself--you may find LATEX normal, desirable...but others feel like what I said in 2.

  • Based on informal inquiries, most of the tenured professors in my college math department don't even use LaTeX (excepting those involved in textbook publishing). – Daniel R. Collins Jun 05 '18 at 12:34

@DanielR.Collins wow. That’s interesting. What do y’all use to type exams? – MichaelLink Jun 05 '18 at 13:10

I'm a high school math teacher and I use LaTeX all the time to make handouts, worksheets, notes, etc. I am the only person in my department who knows LaTeX. But I do find PowerPoint much easier to use than Beamer for presentations. – A. Goodier Jun 05 '18 at 18:37

LaTeX is just not the right tool to get things done quickly. I'd love to typeset some of my material with LaTeX, but I've better things to spend my time on. – Jasper Jun 05 '18 at 21:07
  • @MichaelLink: MS Word. Powerpoint. Blackboard. Pearson TestGen. Hand-written. – Daniel R. Collins Jun 05 '18 at 22:27
  • @Jasper I do not think it is a matter of quickness, but of initial investment (once the entry barrier is crossed, one can get daily things done quickly in LaTeX, but this barrier is non trivial). A well-designed set of templates and piece of software that would let you type in Markdown with basic LaTeX for formulas and compile with the template of your choice could lower the entry barrier to a very reasonable level. – Benoît Kloeckner Jun 06 '18 at 19:58

@rbird Glad I'm not the only one. I tried to teach the basics of LaTex to collaegues and even to some students but they always prefer MS Word. Also there's TiKz. – user5402 Jun 08 '18 at 15:26
  • There's a lot of stuff a teacher has to figure out. Complicated formatting tools are low on the priority list. – Nij Nov 27 '22 at 05:28
