Wing Chun is a Chinese martial art for close-range combat that focuses on self-defense via striking and grappling. It is a Southern style Kung Fu characterized by short and fast movements.

Wing Chun originates from the famous Shaolin monastery in China that studied and practised many styles of Kung Fu. Legend has it that the name Wing Chun (which means "Beautiful Springtime") comes from a young woman with that name.

Wing Chun Kung Fu was made public by grandmaster Yip Man in 1949 and his students spread the art in the 1950s. In the 1970s Wing Chun was made popular in the west via the movies of Bruce Lee.
