Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an extremely influential author and man of mystery, with short stories published in a very wide variety of genres, from gothic horror through mystery and adventure to slapstick comedy. Some of his more famous works include:

  • "The Raven", a dark poem on whose construction he wrote the essay The Philosophy of Composition;
  • 3 Dupin stories, which inspired Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories and thence the entire genre of detective fiction;
  • various chilling pieces of horror, such as "The Masque of the Red Death" and "The Fall of the House of Usher".

Why did Montresor want to kill Fortunato?

In The Cask of Amontillado, Montresor traps Fortunato in the catacombs, but his motives are not explicitly explained. Montresor does allude to some wrongs committed against him by Fortunato. Is it possible to glean something from literary analysis?
