Why were the SI unit prefixes, i.e.
\begin{align} \mathrm{giga} && 10^9 \\ \mathrm{mega} && 10^6 \\ \mathrm{kilo} && 10^3 \\ \mathrm{milli} && 10^{-3} \\ \mathrm{micro} && 10^{-6} \\ \mathrm{nano} && 10^{-9} \end{align}
chosen to be a multiple power of 3?
