Volenna=Granblue Fantasy Theater Guard captain for Brillet Desert, a town surrounded by sand, Volenna is a strict taskmaster who speaks with piercing ferocity and holds herself to the same high standards she places on others. Still empathetic, she understands the loneliness Sara endures, but thinks of it as something she can overcome, believing that Sara has the strength to do so. At times, Volenna entertains the thought of giving Sara more freedom, but ultimately decides against it each time. Despite her harsh attitude and manner of speaking, she's a caring and responsible girl with excellent housekeeping abilities. |

Say Goodbye to the Past[edit]
Volenna, who's nursing Sara back to health, tells (Captain) and company how worried she is about not being good enough, but they reassure her. She considers joining the crew once Sara recovers.
Sara and Volenna, the Priestess of the Dunes and her bodyguard, decided to seal away a primal beast that was flooding Sable Island.
On their way to the shrine where they intended to confine it, the two met (Captain) and company. Together they successfully seal away the beast.
After a bit of travel with the crew, Sara falls ill and is forced to return to Sable Island with Volenna to recuperate.
Worried about Sara, (Captain) and company go to visit her during her long period of recovery.
Sara: Thank you for coming to see me. I'm so glad to see you, Lyria. And of course you, (Captain)... Cough...
Lyria: Yeah! I'm glad to see you too! We were worried when we heard that it's taking so long for you to recover.
Sara: Oh, sorry... Sorry for worrying you...
Sara: Hee-hee... Seeing you guys has really cheered me up. I'm sure I'll be better soon. Cough.
Volenna: Sara. Please rest. I know you're excited about your friends coming to visit, but you'll make yourself worse if you get too excited.
Volenna: (Captain) and the others will still be around for a while yet. You can talk again once you wake up.
Sara: Yes... Cough. Sorry, Lyria. I'm just going to lie down again for a while.
Lyria: Oh, please don't worry about it! Let's talk again another time. Have a good rest, Sara.
Sara goes to lie down, and (Captain) and company leave the room with Volenna.
Volenna: ...
Lyria: Are you all right, Volenna? You don't look so good.
Volenna: Oh, it's nothing. I'm just thinking is all.
Lyria: Um... I know you're really worried about Sara.
Lyria: But you've got to take care of yourself. You won't be any good to anyone if you get ill too.
Volenna: Yes... You're right. Burning myself out wouldn't do anyone any good.
Volenna: But I don't feel like I can take proper care of Sara. I'm pathetically inept.
Vyrn: Hey, don't be so hard on yourself! You're doing your very best to take care of Sara.
Volenna: Well, it's the least I can do to atone for my past sins.
Volenna: I met Sara just after the previous Priestess of the Dunes passed away, back when she was still just a young child.
Volenna: That child had to take up a heavy and fatal duty. She was chosen as the next Priestess of the Dunes.
Volenna: It was cruel, but I, like everyone else, thought it was necessary for the protection of Sable Island.
Lyria: ...
Volenna: Parting is painful if you know someone well. And as she was destined to die anyway, any relationships she had would have only caused her more pain.
Volenna: With that in mind, I distanced myself from Sara.
Volenna: For her part, she restrained herself and refused to rely on other people.
Lyria: But that sounds so lonely!
Volenna: Yes. Now that she's been released from her duties, I want her to be just a bit more selfish—you know, the way children are supposed to be.
Volenna: But Sara still refuses to rely on anyone, even me, in spite of her illness. She continues to carry on alone.
Volenna: I know she's not used to relying on anyone, but perhaps she senses that I'm just not reliable.
Vyrn: No, of course not! Sheesh, Volenna, it sounds like all that nursing is really taking a toll on you.
Volenna: Perhaps... This really isn't like me.
Volenna: But when I saw Sara talking to Lyria and (Captain) so cheerfully...
Volenna: I thought that things would have been easier for Sara if I were more like (Captain).
Choose: It's all because of the bad environment.
Lyria: That's right, Volenna! Both you and Sara have bad memories of Sable Island.
Lyria: So being here brings back those memories, and you end up stuck in a vicious cycle.
Lyria: It's no good to have your mind trapped here like that.
Volenna: My mind trapped?
Volenna: I think you guys might be right.
Choose: Good for you.
Volenna: Wha?
Vyrn: Yep, (Captain) might be on to something!
Volenna: Vyrn... Even you agree?
Vyrn: Heh-heh... Don't you see? You're right down at the bottom of that hole right now, so there's no way to go but up!
Vyrn: So right now you might be nursing Sara and worrying, but things can't get any worse!
Vyrn: Or at least I hope they can't... Well, I can definitely say you're better off being optimistic, right?
Volenna: I suppose you might be right.
Continue 1Volenna: It's hard to do much about guilt related to the past, but I need to keep moving forward.
Volenna: You guys have really helped me to bring things into focus. Thank you.
Lyria: Hee-hee... It was nothing really.
Volenna: That attitude of yours is probably the reason you can help people like me.
Volenna: Once Sara recovers, I think I just might join you on your travels.
Volenna: It would definitely keep me entertained at the least.
Lyria: Wow, that sounds good! You'd be most welcome!
Volenna: I think having that to look forward to will help Sara get better too.
Vyrn: Yeah! It's easy to get bummed out when you're ill for so long. You need something to look forward to!
Volenna: I'll talk to you about this properly when the time comes, (Captain).
Volenna: Uh... I need to give Sara her medicine when she wakes up. I'm gonna go get some water, so wait here.
Vyrn: Ha-ha! Volenna seemed different from before. She was just plain concerned about Sara.
Lyria: Maybe... But I'm not sure if she's actually changed. I think she was always a kind person.
Lyria: Hmm... I think Volenna was trapped by Sara's duties as a Priestess of the Dunes too.
Lyria: I hope Sara gets better soon.
Volenna, once nothing more than a tough bodyguard, has begun to change so she can offer Sara real protection.
Surely she'll find a way to save Sara from her illness.
Intertwined Fate[edit]
(Captain) and company volunteer to take care of some mountain monsters. A boy wants to go with them because the monsters killed his dog, but Volenna dismisses his request, and Lyria convinces him to stay in the village.
(Captain) and company come across a village suffering from repeated raids by monsters.
The crew decides to save the villagers by heading to the mountains to slay the monsters where they live.
Lyria: Now let's go! For the villagers!
Volenna: You seem to have plenty of enthusiasm, but are you sure you're ready for this?
Volenna: A battle's outcome is mostly determined by the preparation... Huh?
Boy: ...
Volenna: Hey, kid. What do you want?
Boy: Um... Please take me with you to beat those monsters!
Lyria: Huh? But it's dangerous!
Boy: I don't care! I want revenge! My dog died protecting me from the boss of those monsters!
Volenna: No.
Boy: Please! He was like a brother to me!
Volenna: No. You'll only get in our way.
Boy: No way... I promise I won't! So please...
Volenna: Humph.
Vyrn: Oh! Ah... She's gone. Gee, she didn't have to be cold!
Lyria: Yeah, but it really is dangerous like she says.
Lyria: Um... We promise to take care of those monsters. So wait for us in the village, okay?
Boy: ...
Intertwined Fate: Scene 2[edit]
When Lyria and the others mention getting revenge for the boy's dog, Volenna says the boy's wish to risk his life is both foolish and insulting to the dog's efforts.
Vyrn: Ugh... There's no end to these monsters. We can't keep this up forever!
Volenna: They definitely have numbers on their side, but I'm more concerned about how coordinated their attacks are.
Volenna: Once we take out their boss, it should be easier to mop up the rest.
Vyrn: I see! Let's go find their boss then!
Volenna: If the boss is the cautious type, it should be in the depths of the mountains protected by its minions.
Volenna: Don't let your guard down, (Captain).
Lyria: That boy said his dog was killed by the boss, didn't he?
Vyrn: Yeah... Let's take out that boss and get revenge for him!
Volenna: How foolish.
Vyrn: Wha? Why would you say that?
Volenna: The idea of going to get revenge is foolish in itself.
Volenna: I suspect that the boy's dog was more than willing to sacrifice his life to protect his master.
Volenna: For the boy to throw his life away in an attempt to get revenge would make that death meaningless.
Volenna: Why would we even want to do such an ignoble thing on the boy's behalf?
Lyria: I see... I didn't think of it that way.
Vyrn: Tch! There are nicer ways to say that, you know?
Volenna: Whatever.
Volenna: Wait, (Captain). Look at these footprints. They're bigger than those of the other monsters.
Volenna: ...
All right, monster, you can hide all you want, but I know you're there!
All right, monster, you can hide all you want, but I know you're there!
Monster: Grrr...
Volenna: There it is! That's a lot of confidence. (Captain), let's go!
Intertwined Fate: Scene 3[edit]
Volenna speaks to the boy in front of his dog's grave, expressing her pride in the dog for protecting the boy. When the boy sees the crew off the next day, he vows to one day learn how to protect people as well.
(Captain) and company successfully defeat the boss and the remaining monsters.
When they report back to the village, the villagers are elated. Not only do they offer a reward, but they ask the crew to stay and rest.
Vyrn: Hey! They said they're gonna give us food at the dining hall!
Lyria: Yay! I'm starving! Let's go, (Captain)! You too, Volenna... Hey, what's the matter?
Volenna: Sorry, but there's something I want to talk to a villager about. Go ahead without me.
Lyria: Okay! But don't overdo it, Volenna. I'm sure you're tired too.
Volenna: I won't. See you later.
Boy: ...
Volenna: There you are.
Boy: It's you...
Volenna: These are for your dog.
Boy: Huh? Flowers? Thank you. You know, for remembering my dog.
Volenna: Your dog was a loyal bodyguard. He faced danger to protect you from harm. As someone who shares the same duty, I'm proud of him.
Boy: Th-thanks.
Boy: But you know, I really wanted him to be here with me. Alive.
Boy: Waah... Sob...
Volenna: This dog is fortunate. Not only did he fulfill his duty, but he has someone who cares enough to cry for him.
Volenna: So say farewell, and cry as much as you'd like.
Boy: Waaah!
Volenna softly pats the boy's head as he cries over his dog's grave.
The next day, the crew is fully rested and ready to leave the village.
Vyrn: Well, it's time to go! Huh? That's...
Boy: Pant... Pant... W-wait!
The boy, whose eyes are red and puffy from crying, calls out to (Captain) and company.
Lyria: What's wrong? Do you need something?
Boy: Um... Miss?
Volenna: What is it?
Boy: When I grow up, I'm gonna protect others just like my dog. No matter what.
Volenna: I see.
Volenna: You finally look halfway decent. Keep your feet to the fire.
Boy: Okay! I'll train as hard as I can!
Volenna is hard on both herself and others, and her words sometimes sound cold.
But the young boy is touched by the kind intentions behind her stern words.
