Rackam=Granblue Fantasy Theater
Soaring through the skydoms on the airship Grandcypher, Rackam made a name for himself as a skilled helmsman before an accident caused him to swear off the skies forever. His encounter with you leads him to take the helm once more and become a steadfast ally. Though blunt, Rackam is remarkably dependable and enjoys looking after others. Granblue Fantasy Chronicle 凄腕の操舵士として名を馳せていたが、過去こ起こした墜落事故のショックにより騎空艇に乗ることを拒んでいた。主人公との出会いをきっかけに再び舵を握ることを決意し、頼もしい仲間となる。一見ぶっきらぼうだが面倒見が良く、世話好きな一面も。主人公達が乗るグランサィファ一は、彼が幼少期に放置されていた騎空艇を改修したもの。 Character Release |

So You Wanna Be a Pilot?[edit]
A young girl asks Rackam if she can be his piloting apprentice. He refuses due to her inexperience, and she runs off. The crew later hears that the girl has been arrested for confronting imperial soldiers, and Rackam sneaks off alone that night to help her.
(Captain) and the crew stop by an island to get the Grandcypher a tune-up.
As they make their way through the town, several helmsman from other airships stop Rackam and praise his skill.
Vyrn: Wow, Rackam! You're pretty popular around here!
Rackam: Beatin' up the empire over and over is just the kinda thing that improves your reputation with pilots.
Lyria: Hehe! Some even asked for your autograph!
Rackam: Haha... It's a real pain. I'm not the celebrity type.
Girl: Hey, you Rackam?
Rackam: Huh? What do you want squirt?
Girl: I'm not a squirt! I'm a helmswoman!
Vyrn: Huh? You pilot airships? Oh, do you want Rackam's autograph?
Girl: No! Why would I want his dumb autograph!
Girl: I want to be Rackam's apprentice!
Rackam: Come again?
Girl: I'm gonna be the best helmswoman to ever sail the skies! And I'm gonna steal all your techniques to do it!
Girl: You took on the empire, right? That makes you the perfect teacher!
Lyria: The best helmswoman to ever sail the skies... That's quite a big dream for such a little person!
Girl: I'm not little! Go away, blue girl! The

Girl: Whimper... Yeah! So what!
Girl: I've worked on an airship before! Cleaning, laundry, luggage, and—
Rackam: You got about ten years left before you can pilot a ship.
Rackam: Go and train in Golonzo. Learn more about airships and how they work. Build your strength, and—
Girl: Shut up! What makes you so high and mighty!
Girl: My... Sniff... My daddy was a helmsman!
Girl: He designed a brand new airship, but he got sick... So I'm going to build it and fly it for him!
Rackam: I see... But you know, bein' a pilot means takin' an entire crew's lives into your hands.
Rackam: You can't rush it. Get out there and get more experience. There's no other way.
Girl: Don't lecture me, you stupid poopy beard!
Vyrn: She's gone. Do you think she'll take your advice, Rackam?
Rackam: She will. Trust me—I could see it in her eyes.
Rackam: She's got an airship she wants to fly... And attitude to spare. But you need guts like hers to pilot a ship.
Lyria: Huh? You seem sort of happy, Rackam!
Rackam: You kiddin'? Course not.
Lyria: Munch... Munch... Wow! This is all delicious. Have you guys had any yet?
Rackam: Haha! Stop talkin' with your mouth full!
After the Grandcypher is finished with its tune-up, the crew takes a minute to grab a bite to eat. A helmsman approaches them.
Helmsman: Hey, Rackam! Did you hear the news?
Helmsman: You were talking to a girl in the afternoon, right? Well, turns out she got into an argument with an imperial soldier, and they arrested her!
Rackam: Arrested! She's just a kid!
Helmsman: Apparently her bags were confiscated, and she flew off the handle at the soldier!
Helmsman: But I'm sure she'll be released soon enough. She would've been fine if she'd just stayed calm... What an idiot.
Rackam: Hope you're right.
Vyrn: You think she's really okay? That wasn't too smart of her...
Lyria: I'm worried about her. I hope nothing horrible happens...
Rackam: ...
Vyrn: What should we do, (Captain)? She'll probably get out eventually, but still...
Choose: Let's go and save her!
Lyria: Yeah! Let's go!
Choose: Let's see what happens...
Lyria: Um... You don't feel bad for her?

Rackam: In case you've forgotten, we're being pursued by the empire. You really just want to drop in and say hi?
Lyria: I guess you have a point...
Rackam: She's just a kid. They'll give her a slap on the wrist and let her go.
Rackam: Let's turn in for the night. If you're still worried, we can go in the morning.
Vyrn: If you say so, Rackam...
Rackam: Hmm... Luggage, was it...
Lyria: What? Did you say something, Rackam?
Rackam: Wha—nope. Not a peep.
The crew retires to an inn, where (Captain) is awoken by Vyrn in the dead of night.
Vyrn: Hey... You awake? It's Lyria...
Lyria: Sorry to wake you like this... It's just that I have a really bad feeling...
Vyrn: It's Rackam—he's gone. I checked his room, and nobody's there.
Lyria: Eek! What was that?
Vyrn: That was gunfire! And it sounded really familiar...
Vyrn: Wait! What if it's Rackam!
Lyria: Did he go to rescue that girl by himself?
Vyrn: He didn't even ask us to come with him! What a jerk!
Vyrn: We're comin', Rackam!
Rackam has parted from his crewmates to confront the empire and save the little helmswoman.
With mounting worry, the crew hurries after Rackam.
Only Pilots Get It[edit]
Rackam rescues the girl, but some soldiers find them fleeing, and a vicious battle ensues. The two fugitives are soon surrounded. Rackam decides to let the girl escape on her own, but (Captain) and the others come to the rescue just in time.
Rackam: Jeez... Those guys just never give up!
Girl: Rackam... I'm sorry. I...
The crew met a girl who wants to be a helmswoman, but after getting into an argument with an imperial soldier, she found herself arrested.
Rackam set off on his own to rescue her, but the two of them are spotted during the escape attempt and are currently fleeing into the night.
Rackam: Don't cry. Not matter what, you have to keep lookin' straight ahead.
Girl: But why did you come to save me?
Rackam: You wanna be a helmswoman, right?
Rackam: No matter how much of a little punk they are, I won't abandon another ship-lover.
Girl: This is all my fault...
Rackam: Enough about that. Just hang on to that
bag—your father's plans are in there, right?

Rackam: Ugh...

Rackam: Yeah, don't worry. Just a little crack in my armor.

Imperial Soldier: Can you hear me, fugitives? We have you completely surrounded! Come out with your hands up!
Girl: What do we do now?
Rackam: Stay cool. Pilots need to be calm and collected no matter what happens.
Rackam: But we're in a tight spot. You run on ahead.
Girl: Don't be stupid! What are you gonna do?
Rackam: I'll figure it out as I go... Maybe I'll just steal a weapon from one of them.
Girl: No! Don't!
Rackam: Cut it out with the tantrum! You never heard of listenin' to your elders?
Vyrn: Ah, you're safe!
You idiot!

Rackam: What are you guys doin' here?
Vyrn: That's our line! What were you thinking coming here on your own?
Rackam: This kid is my responsibility as a helmsman. You guys didn't need to get involved.
Lyria: That's not your choice to make! We're your friends, aren't we?
Rackam: Of course you are, but that doesn't mean you should risk your necks for no good reason.
Lyria: That's not your choice either! It'd be a really lonely world if everyone thought like you.
Rackam: Sheesh... No match for you, am I?
Rackam: Sigh... I get it. I'm sorry. Next time I'll keep you guys in the loop.
Vyrn: Hah! You finally get it!
Rackam: You guys brought extra ammo, right? All right! Let's break through their lines!
Vyrn: Here we go!
Only Pilots Get It: Scene 2[edit]
(Captain) and most of the crew escape the soldiers and board the Grandcypher, but Lyria is taken hostage. Rackam pretends to surrender to throw the soldiers off guard. The rest of the crew quickly joins the fray.
Having escaped the empire's clutches once again, the crew heads back to the Grandcypher and prepares for take off.
Rackam: Everyone aboard? We're liftin' off!
Vyrn: Right! Let's hightail it out of here!
Vyrn: Wait! Where's Lyria? She's not here!
Rackam: What!
Lyria: I'm sorry, everyone...
Imperial Soldier: Stop right there, criminal scum! You don't want this girl to get hurt, do you?
Rackam: Damn... They got her...
Imperial Soldier: You're quite the foolish group. To go so far for a little brat...
Rackam: You're the foolish one—not understandin' the bond between helmsmen.
Imperial Soldier: As if it matters. You will surrender to us at once!
Rackam: All right, all right. I'll turn myself in. There's no reason to yell.
Rackam: But you know... The girl you're lookin' for isn't even here!
Imperial Soldier: What! Then where'd she go?
Rackam: Now!
Girl: Hands off Lyria!
Imperial Soldier: Oof!
Rackam: Haha! Nicely done!

Only Pilots Get It: Scene 3[edit]
After beating the soldiers, the crew flees into the sky on the Grandcypher. The girl is grateful to Rackam, but the remaining soldiers send monsters after the ship to try to bring it down. The girl suggests fleeing, but Rackam refuses to do so since his ship has been damaged.
After defeating the imperial soldiers, the crew departs the island.
Night envelops the Grandcypher as it flies steadily away.
Rackam: Phew... Looks like we made it...
Vyrn: Yeah, but only by the skin of our fangs! I'm glad you're safe, little girl!
Lyria: Yeah! And I see that you retrieved your father's plans too!
Girl: Yep, thank you! They woulda still had 'em too if Rackam hadn't come!
Girl: Rackam charging into the prison like that was so cool!
Vyrn: Heh-heh... Wow, Rackam. You pilot types sure are popular!
Rackam: Can it. The plans were important to her, so I had to help.
Lyria: Wait... What's that over there?
Rackam: What? You see another ship or somethin'?
Lyria: No... I thought I saw something shining over by the island.
Lyria: Aaah!
Vyrn: Whoa! What's going on!
Lyria: It's monsters! Monsters are attacking the ship!
Rackam: Dammit! Those imperials must've sent them after us!
Girl: Rackam, let's get outta here! If we go full speed, we can—
Rackam: You're not serious. A helmsman's ship is his life!
Rackam: And those monsters just hurt my baby! I won't just run off now!
Girl: Rackam...
Rackam: Reverse course! Let's take them on, (Captain)!
Only Pilots Get It: Scene 4[edit]
(Captain) and the crew defeat the monsters and land on a peaceful island. The girl gives Rackam a new set of armor to replace his old cracked set. He brushes off her show of affection and gets her to promise to become a great pilot so they can meet again.
After defeating the monsters, the crew lands on a peaceful island just as the sun begins to rise.
Rackam: Yawn... Dammit, was awake all night...
Vyrn: Phew... I don't wanna do anything like that ever again.
Girl: Heeey! Rackam! Rackam!
Rackam: Sheesh, energetic little brat. Or am I just getting' old...
Girl: I bought you some new armor, since yours got cracked when you were protecting me!
Lyria: Hehe! You should have seen how long it took her to choose it!
Rackam: Ah... Thanks, kid. Now we should probably get to an inn...
Girl: No! Put it on first! We wanna see a
brand-new Rackam!
brand-new Rackam!
Rackam: Sigh... Fine. If you insist.
Rackam: There we go... Hey! This isn't too bad!
Girl: Told ya so! See how well I know my armor?
Girl: Also... there's something I wanted to ask you.
Rackam: What is it now? Spit it out, then get yourself to bed.
Girl: Do you... have a girlfriend?
Rackam: Huh! What kind of a question is that?
Vyrn: Heh-heh... I woulda brought snacks if I knew there was gonna be a show.
Lyria: Haha! How exciting!
Girl: So? How bout it, Rackam? If you don't, then I—
Rackam: Seriously, squirt, look... You've got a lot of growin' up to do.
Girl: Hey! Who you callin'—
Rackam: You have to concentrate on training and becoming an amazing helmswoman.
Rackam: Next time we meet, it'll be in the sky, with me on the Grandcypher and you on the ship you've built—your father's ship.
Girl: Hehe. Okay! Pinky swear!
Rackam: Pinky swear!
Rackam stands a little taller in his new set of armor.
He couldn't be prouder to have helped foster the talents of a legendary helmswoman in the making.
Good Ol' Rackam[edit]
A fierce battle in the Nalhegrande Skydom has knocked out the Grandcypher's engine. Noa recommends putting in the engine of the Grandsleuth, sister ship of the Grandcypher. Rackam, though hesitant at first, is moved by Noa's words as the primal shipwright of both vessels and decides to go through with the engine transfer.
Youngster: Whoa!
Several hundred years after the conclusion of the War, an airship ravaged by said conflict survived until present day. One sunny morning, it has a chance encounter with a curious boy.
Youngster: This is too cool! I've never seen such a beautiful airship before!
Despite the airship being greatly weathered and severely damaged, the boy looks on in wonder.
Youngster: Hey! What's your name?
Like a curious puppy, he runs to and fro, checking every nook and cranny of the vessel before his eyes stop on a rust-covered nameplate.
Youngster: Grand... cy... pher...
The boy attempts to read the name while carefully chipping off some of the rust.
Rackam: Nice to meetcha, Grandcypher! I'll be your captain from now on! You can call me Rackam!
For nearly twenty years now, the boy and ship have shared a special bond.
Intent on seeing the Grandcypher take to the skies once more, he never ceased repairs on the vessel, despite stumbling every now and then. The boy eventually matured into a full-fledged adult.
Their chance encounter shifted each of their fates greatly.
The Grandcypher was finally able to take flight once more. Together they saved the whole of the Port Breeze Archipelago and the primal beast Tiamat.
That's when the long-retired airship's journey began anew, traveling to distant islands and even traversing the perilous Grim Basin that divides skydoms.
The path has been paved with countless hardships. With its seasoned helmsman at the wheel, the Grandcypher managed to come out of events no less harrowing than the bygone War in one piece.
However...
Rackam: Tch... Let's get out of here!
Rackam: Otherwise we'll be buried alive in a shower of broken wall chunks!
Rackam: We've got holes everywhere. The wings, the ballonet, the deck, you name it...
Eugen: Forget about flying. We ain't even stayin' afloat for much longer.
This battle of epic proportions ended with the Grandcypher losing the ability to fly.
It was by pure coincidence that they crash-landed on the Angads Highlands, where the ship and boy had first met.
Noa: ...
The primal Noa, creator of the great vessel, attempted repairs using his special powers.
Rackam: How's it look?
Noa: Let's see here...
Noa: The engine is beyond repair. Even for a shipwright primal beast like myself.
Though there is no way to restore the Grandcypher's engine, in essence its very heart, the crew is not at a complete loss.
Rackam: So long as we get a new engine in there, the Grandcypher's days in the sky aren't over yet, eh?
Noa: Although engines generally don't work across different airships...
Noa: The Grandsleuth's a special case, what with it being the Grandcypher's sister ship.
Rackam: Sister ship, eh? You know, hearing you call it a legendary vessel really gives it some sparkle.
Noa: Hehe. Its basic design and functionality actually aren't too different from the Grandcypher's.
Noa: Shall we go see the engine for ourselves? I'm fairly certain it'll work fine, but it wouldn't hurt to check in person.
Rackam: Wow, you're not kidding when you say sister ship... It looks nearly identical inside. Is there any reason why they were made to look alike?
Noa: Hm... Care to take a guess at it, Rackam?
Rackam: Huh? Well, let's see...
Rackam: Airships are generally one of a kind, right? Meaning you probably wouldn't think to make a copy as a spare or for its parts. So...
Noa: Do let me know when you think you've figured it out.
Rackam: Heh, you're always such a tease.
Noa: Haha. You know how I am, Rackam.
Noa: Next up is the bridge.
Rackam: ...!
True to his nature as one who steers his way across the clear blue skies, Rackam's expression brightens upon seeing Noa's hand on the door to the bridge.
Rackam: Hm...
Rackam: It sure is strange how even though the ship's barely any different from ours, it feels like something else entirely.
Noa: The voyage a ship's undertaken becomes a part of the aura that it gives off.
Noa: But as I mentioned earlier, the basic blueprint remains the same.
Noa: Now let's see if it'll power on okay. Can you do the honors, Rackam?
Rackam: Sure.
Rackam flips a few familiar-looking levers and turns on the engine.
The Grandsleuth powers on without a hitch.
Rackam: Sweet. Working like a charm so far.
Noa: I wouldn't be surprised if the Grandsleuth has been waiting for you.
Rackam: You think so?
Rackam finds the rumble of this engine to be a tad bit deeper than what he's used to hearing.
Rackam: Mind if I rev it up a bit?
Noa: Not in the least. I've tweaked the settings to differ slightly from the Grandcypher, so make sure you do it slowly.
Rackam: Gotcha.
Rackam: What the!
Startled by how rapidly the engine is suddenly spinning, he quickly turns the lever back.
Rackam: Whew, too close for comfort! Guess I turned it up too many notches too soon... That's a heck of a tuning job you did, Noa.
Noa: The Grandsleuth has had more than its fair share of air battles. I modified it to allow for rapid shifts in speed and altitude, prioritizing its evasion capabilities.
Rackam: Hoo boy... Keeping a steady speed's not gonna be easy...
Rackam closes his eyes and visualizes the superior mobility of the Grandsleuth, outpacing and outmaneuvering the enemy at every turn like an eagle born to soar up high.
Rackam: The fluid mobility to weave through even a wave of cannon fire... I'm sure this was one heck of a ship.
Noa: Hearing you say that just makes my day.
Rackam: ...
Rackam knits his eyebrows, unsure of the next step to take.
Noa: Rackam?
Rackam: ...!
The bemused helmsman knocks his forehead with his knuckles, outwardly displaying his uncertainty.
Noa: What's wrong?
Rackam: Ripping her engine out somehow just feels wrong...
Noa: Hehe, I thought you might say that. I appreciate the consideration, but there's no need to hesitate.
Rackam: Still though...
Noa: I know exactly how you feel from losing your ship, Rackam. That's one part of you that's never changed since you were a child.
Rackam: Haha, you got that right. I couldn't stop talking about the Grandcypher as a kid.
Noa: ...
Rackam: Everything okay?
Noa: It's nothing really, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised you forgot since it happened so long ago.
Rackam: What do you mean?
Noa: It's no big deal. Anyhow, as the shipwright of both vessels, I'd like you to transfer the engine.
Noa: If the ships could speak, I'm sure they'd say the same.
Rackam: Even if it means the Grandsleuth won't ever take flight again?
Noa: It's already fulfilled its role. That's why it went into slumber.
Noa: But a great power still rests inside it.
Rackam: ...
Noa: Accept the Grandsleuth's engine and take your ship to the skies once more, Rackam.
Noa: Lest all the time, care, and love you put into repairing the Grandcypher should go to waste.
Rackam: ...
Rackam grips and turns the wheel, its weighty feel calling to mind what it must have been like for the helmsman of yore.
Rackam: All right, Noa. Sorry for pussyfooting at the last second.
Noa: Your hesitation is exactly why I know you're the right person to entrust the matter to.
Rackam: Heh... You saw right through me from the get-go, eh?
Noa: You really haven't changed in the slightest since you were but a child.
Noa: Should we get started then? I'll set the engine output to your preference, Rackam.
Rackam: Good to know.
Rackam: We'll make darn good use of your heart, Grandsleuth... You can count on it!
The helmsman who had dedicated his entire youth to a single airship accepts the legacy of its sister ship, ready to sail the skies once more.
Good Ol' Rackam: Scene 2[edit]
Rackam and Noa enlist the help of many Golonzo mechanics—who are eager to work on the famous Grandcypher—for the engine transfer. Upon successful completion of the task, Rackam holds a launching ceremony.
Rackam: All right! Let's do this!
Mechanics: Ahoy!
Rackam: Nice to see you guys so pumped up about it... I might've put it lightly when I mentioned transferring the engine, but I hope you know it won't be cakewalk.
Mechanic 1: Getting the chance to work on the Grandcypher is like a dream come true. You bet we're pumped!
Mechanic 2: To be blessed with the opportunity to mend the wings of heroes is a thrill I won't soon forget! You can count on us to do whatever it takes!
Rackam: Glad to hear it. First order of business is taking the Grandsleuth apart.
And thus begins the engine-transfer operation.
Both vessels are lined up side by side at a wharf, with specially-made rails placed between them for ease of moving the entire engine over at once.

Rackam: Not a chance. You know how many years I spent fixing her into working condition?
Noa: Hehe. I actually do know the exact number.
With much trial and error, they somehow manage to swap the two airships' engines. Even after the transfer succeeds, however, problems persist.
Rackam: Now we don't have enough gears in place?
Noa: The settings for that are different on both ships...
Noa: ...
Noa: The specially-forged gears in that warehouse would make for a suitable replacement.
Noa's advice allows them to progress, slowly but steadily.
Word of this effort to revive the Grandcypher spreads far, and hundreds of mechanics join the effort in only a matter of days.
Rackam: With this many people helpin' out, I'm not sure who to thank when it's all over and done with.
Noa: All it takes is for one person to hear that the great helmsman Rackam needs help, and everyone comes scrambling to breathe life back into his beloved Grandcypher.
Rackam: Haha... I guess you could say we've risen to greatness, eh?
Hooligan 1: We heard all about it, Rackam!
Hooligan 2: Hope ya don't mind us takin' a whack at it!
Rackam: Sure. Always glad for the help...
Noa: ...
Rackam: What's wrong, Noa?
Noa: The Grandcypher certainly has risen to fame...
Rackam: Yep. It's a funny feeling, isn't it?
Noa: ...
A look of suspicion crosses Noa's face every now and then. However, progress on the effort continues.
Rackam: This is it, guys! The final stretch! Go for it!
Rackam & Help: Hrgh!
The three simultaneously try to screw a giant bolt into place.
The wrench makes a squeaking sound, indicating the bolt is on as tight as it can be.
Rackam: Whew, I'm beat. How 'bout it, Noa? You think that's the end of it?
Noa: Haha. Fine work, Rackam. Allow me to go over it.
Noa begins a final inspection.
Noa: ...
Noa touches every part of the Grandcypher, as if speaking to it.
He takes his time, careful to scrutinize even the smallest imperfections in each nail.
Noa: A splendid job indeed. We really have to give it up for Golonzo's mechanics.
Having earned Noa's seal of approval, Rackam and the mechanics gather before the steering wheel, ready to start up the newly-installed engine.
Rackam: ...
Rackam finds himself hesitating, his hands frozen on the activation switch.
Rackam: Haha... I always get tense at the last moment.
Rackam: Okay then... Here goes!
His resolve finally taking hold, Rackam flips the lever.
The Grandcypher rumbles and its engine purrs. Its wings begin to rotate in force, causing the anchored ship to lift off the ground slightly.
Rackam: Well, Noa?
Noa: Congrats, Rackam. The Grandcypher can soar the skies once more.
Rackam & Help: Whoo-hoo-hoo!
All present slap high fives at each other, raucous cheers filling the air.
While cleaning up the rails and other materials, Rackam thanks the mechanics for their help.
Mechanic 1: Hey, Rackam. You guys'll be taking off soon, right? Might as well get this over with now!
The mechanic takes out a fancy bottle of wine. Rackam pauses upon accepting it.
Rackam: ...
Noa: What is it?
Rackam: I just remembered how things were such a jumble when I first flew the Grandcypher that I never got to do this...
Rackam pops open the cork, takes a sip, and flips the bottle over.
Rackam: Hngh!
He proudly smashes the bottle on the bow of the Grandcypher, its glass fragments and droplets scattering to the skies.
Mechanics: Whoo!
Rackam: That's another dream knocked off the list. Finally got the chance to do the Grandcypher Launching Ceremony.
Noa: Hehe... Thanks, Rackam.
Rackam: Hey, I should be the one to thank you.
Noa: Nuh-uh. As the Grandcypher's shipwright, I couldn't be more happy to see it loved by so many people.
Rackam: Likewise. If she'd never come into my life, I wouldn't be who I am today.
The two trade smiles.
The moment in which the Grandcypher takes to the skies once more draws ever closer.
Good Ol' Rackam: Scene 3[edit]
As Rackam and Noa make preparations to meet up with the crew in Valtz, they realize the ship has been hijacked by knaves posing as mechanics. Noa takes a gun called Benedia out of the Grandcypher's storage and hands it to Rackam so that they can reclaim the ship.
Rackam: So we put the Grandcypher's engine in the Grandsleuth and cleaned everything up. It's all done.
Rackam looks warmly at the Grandsleuth, situated beside the Grandcypher at the wharf.
Rackam: So, Noa.
Noa: Yes, Rackam?
Rackam: You think that ship's ever gonna find its place in the skies again?
Noa: Why... do you ask?
Rackam: It's just this funny feeling I get. The Grandsleuth doesn't feel any different from before our work here started.
Rackam: When you've spent as much time with airships as I have, you start to develop a sense of their life force.
Rackam: Who knows? Maybe one day, these two can fly side by side like the sister ships they are. My gut tells me it could happen...
Noa: Haha... Looks like you've developed a better sense for these things than I, a primal shipwright.
Rackam: Oh, I'm definitely not trying to compete with you. Haha...
Rackam listens in on the Grandcypher's pulse while preparing for departure to Valtz, where (Captain) and company had ventured off to.
The Grandcypher's wings begin to turn and shift with a rumble, taking off from Golonzo.
Rackam, however, is more than a bit surprised as the Grandcypher continues ascending upward at a rapid speed.
Rackam: Gaaah!
Rackam clings to the rope ladder tied to the ship's exterior.
Rackam: Doggone it! Why would the Grandcypher just take off on its own!
Rackam: Noa! Please tell me this isn't one of your pranks!
Noa is right beneath Rackam on the rope ladder.
Noa: No, I haven't done anything. Although...
Man 1: Hehehe... Too easy.
Man 2: With that many mechanics goin' in and out, sneakin' onboard was a cakewalk.
Man 1: A ship this famous oughta fetch us some real nice coin.
Men: Gyahahaha!
Noa: It looks like a few knaves slipped in with the mechanics.
Rackam: Hell no! No one steers my ship without me knowing!
While being blasted by fierce winds, Rackam desperately reaches out for the next rung over his head.
Rackam: This ship!
Rackam: Is!
Rackam: Mine!
Seething with rage, Rackam climbs the ladder one step at a time.
Rackam: Ow! Damn it, thought I was a goner for a sec!
Rackam crashes into the storage room from the window and makes preparations to take back the Grandcypher.
Rackam: Noa, how many are there?
Noa: From here, I can tell there are at least ten of them. Each fully armed.
Rackam: Hm, I guess going out there empty-handed wouldn't make for a warm welcome. Problem is, I left all my weaponry in Golonzo...
Rackam turns the storage room inside out, grumbling to himself all the while.
Rackam: Whoa! This brings back memories!
Rackam: Get a load of my old getup.
Rackam: As for weapons... Looks like all I've got are a flare gun and a few shots to go with it...
Rackam: Woo-hoo. With these big guns, not even the Holy Erste Empire can take me on.
Rackam: Ahahaha... Hah... Sigh. What do I do...
Rackam clutches his head with a dry laugh.
Noa: You know, Rackam... The Grandcypher has emergency systems in place to deal with these sorts of situations.
Rackam: Huh?
Keeping Rackam's puzzled face in his peripheral vision, Noa places a hand on the wall. As he does so, he pulls away a panel to reveal the gleaming form of a gun.
Rackam: Whoa, was that hidden panel there this whole time? And what's with the gun? Don't think I've ever seen it before.
Noa: It's called the Benedia. I'm sure you'll make good use of it.
Rackam accepts the gun and accompanying ammunition from Noa, gazing at the weapon in awe.
Rackam: From your tone, I take it this is a piece from the War?
Noa: Correct. As old as it may be, the special preservation method should have kept its form and function intact.
Seeing that its contents are empty, Rackam cocks the hammer and pulls the trigger. The response is astoundingly smooth.
Rackam: No kidding. The precision on this baby's lookin' real fine too. I could get used to this.
Rackam peers through the sights and then gazes at the full length of the piece, a satisfied smile crossing his lips.
Noa: I'm glad you like the Benedia. It's yours now.
Rackam: Haha, this is gonna be great.
Rackam: All right then... Time to take back the Grandcypher!
With the Benedia in hand, Rackam leaps out of the storage room.
Noa: Rackam, you really haven't changed at all.
Noa sees him off with a grin.
Young Rackam: This is mine after all!
Noa: From the time you were a child...
Noa reminisces of the days when Rackam was but a youth and the two had just met.
Rackam's Driving Force[edit]
Rackam and Noa proceed through the Grandcypher to take back their vessel. The primal remarks on how Rackam has always taken great care of his possessions even as a child, which gets his mind stirring about the old days. They later run into a group of knaves.
The Grandcypher suffered irreparable damage to its engine across numerous battles and lost the ability to fly.
But through the efforts of Rackam, Noa, and countless Golonzo mechanics, the Grandcypher makes a miraculous recovery and soars the skies once more.
Rackam: Oh, those blowhards are really gonna get it! They've got some nerve to be comin' aboard my ship!
The one currently steering the Grandcypher is not Rackam.
The crew's resident helmsman is in the storage room, loading bullets into his new gun, Benedia, a gift from Noa.
Noa: No need to put so much force into it, Rackam. The bullets are of a special type, you see.
Rackam: I know, but I just can't help it right now!
Fury evident in his expression, Rackam finishes loading the chamber, cocks the hammer, and stirs himself up for the battle to come.
Rackam: I don't know who the hell you are, but you're about to find out what happens when you lay your dirty mitts on my ship.
With numerous achievements under its belt, the Grandcypher's fame has spread far and wide.
Its usurpers are trying to turn that fame into riches.
Rackam: We're taking the Grandcypher back! C'mon, Noa!
Noa: Right.
Rackam: Let's see...
Rackam is surprisingly calm, without a trace of the anger he had shown earlier.
He sticks a knife out from the door, carefully surveying the situation from the blade's reflection before slinking out of the storage room.
Noa: Smart move... I'm glad to see you've calmed down.
Rackam: Oh, I'm just keeping it in. The moment I get my chance, I'm gonna tear those punks to pieces!
Rackam: Course I've gotta keep calm if I expect my bullets to land. At least till the ship's ours again, I'll play it cool.
Noa: Haha. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Ah, the memories...
Rackam: That again? Did something happen when I was a kid?
Noa: Sure did. Even as a child, the love you poured into your own possessions was many times that of other people.
Rackam: You think so?
While chewing on the thought, Rackam points his gun at the shadows, making sure to check every potential hiding spot.
Noa: Hm, this takes me back to the old days...
When they come to a point where there are rooms on both sides of the hall, Noa suddenly speaks up.
Noa: To the right.
Rackam: Yeah?
Rackam's reflexes kick in. He turns to the door on the right and notices the knob turning.
Knave: Wha?
Rackam: ...
Rackam: Hyaah!
Knave: Urk!
His nose smashed in with the barrel of the gun, the knave falls to the ground.
Knave: Wh-who the heck are you!
Rackam: Psh, look who's talkin'!
Rackam: Right back at you, chump!
As the knave reaches for a weapon, Rackam points the Benedia's muzzle toward him.
Rackam's Driving Force: Scene 2[edit]
Following Noa's advice on enemy movements, Rackam takes out one knave after another. This brings back memories of the slingshot Noa gifted him so many years ago—and all the target practice they did together. They reach the ringleader shortly thereafter, who sends more men their way.
Rackam: That should do it.
Tied-Up Knave: Mrgh! Blrrghmff!!
After stuffing a rag in the knave's mouth and tying him up, Rackam leaves the room.
Noa: The room opposite this one next.
Rackam: Gotcha! Hrgh!
Knave 1: Oof!
Without even resorting to his gun, Rackam is able to fell the knave with a flying kick.
Noa: There's three on the other side of this door. Ready for it?
Rackam: I've got this!
Rackam eagerly ruffles through his pockets.
Rackam: Special delivery incomiiiing.
Knave 2: What the!
The knave grabs the object suddenly lobbed at him. It turns out to be a signal flare.
Knave 2: Yeow! Too hot to handle!
Having had its fuse cut short, the flare has already gone off. This gives Rackam a chance to ready his weapon.
Rackam: Eat this!
Knave 3: Rgh!
Knave 4: Gwah!
With the Benedia in one hand and a flare gun in the other, Rackam simultaneously pulls the trigger on each, knocking out both knaves.
Rackam: Lights out!
Knave 2: Ack!
Rackam finishes off the last knave by hurling the flare gun straight at his head.
Rackam: Heh, you see that!
Noa: Haha. Not bad, Rackam.
Noa offers a small applause, for the hotshot helmsman managed to take out three opponents in the blink of an eye.
Rackam: To be totally honest, I'm not sure it'd be so easy if you weren't so familiar with the Grandcypher's inner workings and the enemy positions.
Noa: We're in the clear for now.
Rackam: You know, this is starting to take me back...
Noa: So you remember then?
Rackam: You're talking about the slingshot, right?
Rackam: It's been nearly twenty years. I totally forgot about it.
Rackam: ...
Noa: Hello, Rackam. I see you're not with Eugen today.
Rackam: Uh-huh. He wanted to cool off after finishing a job. He's at the tavern with friends.
Noa: Sounds fun. Why didn't you go with him?
Rackam: The snacks they've got there all taste funny! I wish he'd just stay around to teach me more about airships.
Noa: I see... You want the Grandcypher to fly again one day, right?
Rackam: Yep. That's why I've gotta study more.
Noa: Care to study with me today?
Rackam: Hm? You know about airships, Noa?
Noa: It's one of my passing interests. I can even show you Golonzo's airship factory.
Rackam: Whoa! Look at all the parts they've got here!
Noa: These are all scrap materials, parts that have run their course. But nonetheless, there's a lot we can learn from them.
Noa: For instance, it's easy to determine if something is made of iron, but there are many different kinds of iron.
Rackam: Yeah, I know about that! There's e... elasticity and composition... and it's different for every type!
Noa: That's right. Because each one serves its own distinct role.
Noa picks up a piece of wire and slides it across the length of his finger.
It then curves around into the form of a coil.
Noa: Depending on the nature of the material used, it may not function properly as a spring even when twisted into this shape.
Rackam: What did you just do? The wire curled up by itself.
Noa: Haha, you'll figure it out yourself once you're older.
Rackam: So how exactly do the materials differ?
Noa picks up one piece of scrap material after another, explaining the nature of each one to Rackam.
Noa: The next one will be from the right.
Rackam: Okay!
Rackam stands at the ready. From behind him, Noa flings a paper disc.
Rackam: ...!
Rackam whips out the slingshot by his waist and launches a rock at the disc.
Rackam: Bull's-eye!
Noa: Hehe. Not bad, not bad. You're quite the quick draw, Rackam.
At the end of his lecture regarding the nature of iron, Noa devises a slingshot from a mix of soft and hard iron. Rackam uses it for target practice.
Rackam: Hehe... Let's go for three discs at once next!
Noa: So you like a challenge, I see. That's a wonderful thing.
Noa: Here goes. From above, then from the right, then from the left—in that order.
Rackam puts the slingshot back in the pouch on his waist, ready to draw it at a moment's notice.
Noa: I would tell you the direction, and you'd shoot... The target practice we did back then feels a lot like what we're doing now.
Rackam: Now that you mention it, yeah... Except the situation's a heckuva lot more serious right now.
Noa: Serious, but nostalgic. The sparkle in your eyes back then convinced me to entrust you with the Grandcypher.
Rackam: That's all it took? Watching me practice with a slingshot?
Noa: Well, that and something else.
Rackam: Huh? Did something else happen?
The two proceed through the Grandcypher without a foe in sight.
Rackam: I wonder where that slingshot you made for me went though.
Rackam: I was definitely a big fan of it, so it's not likely I lost it either...
Noa: Oh yes, you definitely took a liking to the slingshot...
Noa: Don't you remember other children in the neighborhood swiping it from you?
Rackam: Huh?
A look of bafflement crosses Rackam's face, but the feeling of tension returns when they come before a shut door.
Rackam: I'd love to hear the rest, but first thing's first.
Knave 2: Boss, seems like a brawl broke out on the ship earlier.
The knave reports to his boss through a speaking tube.
Knave Leader: I made sure to check every nook and cranny of the ship. Didn't think there were any stragglers left...
Knave 5: We're losing men left and right. Who knows how many of them there are...
Knave Leader: But it's nothin' to worry about. Won't matter how many of 'em come. I've put countermeasures in place.
The leader of the knaves wears a relaxed smile, until the door straight ahead of him opens up.
Rackam: ...
Knave Leader: There you are. I don't know how many people you brought along for the ride, but you've got guts to show up before me without all your lackeys.
Rackam: This is everyone.
Knave Leader: Wha?
Noa: I should mention that all I've done is offer advice.
Noa: Rackam might actually get angry if I chipped in any more than that.
Knave Leader: You? Took out my men? All by yourself?
Rackam: Well, I had a little help. It did take a bit of effort though.
Rackam: Anyhoo, either gimme back my ship, or get ready for a world of hurt.
Knave Leader: How did you do it? No matter...
Knave Leader: Not like you can outsmart your way against this many toughs.
Rackam: Heh.
Rackam's Driving Force: Scene 3[edit]
Mistaking Noa for the rumored girl in blue who can control primal beasts, the ringleader takes out a dark essence capsule that is damaging to primals. Rackam feigns compliance before pulling off a quick-draw maneuver to destroy the capsule. Fisticuffs ensue.
Knave Leader: Y-you really wiped the floor with us...
Rackam: So? What's next? Ready to give it up yet?
Knave: Damn you!
Noa: Rackam, 7 o'clock.
Rackam: Got it.
Without even turning away from the leader of the knaves, Rackam shoots down the underling who stands back up.
Knave: Rgh!
Noa: That should do it. I don't see anyone else trying to move.
Rackam: Good to know.
Knave Leader: No, don't tell me... Could this string bean actually be...
The knave leader seems to realize something about Noa.
Knave Leader: You must be the oft-rumored blue-haired girlie!
Noa: Huh?
Rackam: Say what?
Knave Leader: I-I've looked into your crew! One of you is this girl with crazy powers!
Knave Leader: Somethin' to do with primal beasts! That's what people know her for!
Rackam: Um, yeah... I... don't even know how to answer that.
Knave Leader: Hehehe... Now that your secret's out, I just might have a chance!
The man ruffles through his pockets and produces a capsule.
Noa: ...!
Rackam: What's wrong, Noa?
Knave Leader: This here's dark essence! I stole my way through Agastia to pilfer some durin' all the commotion!
Rackam: That stuff is bad news!
Knave Leader: We're not dumb enough to take a crew of your level head-on. This dark essence is our insurance.
Knave Leader: Hehe! I don't have a clue how to use the thing, but word is it makes primal beasts toss and turn! I've just gotta flip this thingamajig!
The man activates some sort of control panel on the dark essence capsule, causing it to emit an eerie glow.
Noa: Urgh!
A sickly pallor falls over Noa. The noise from the dark essence appears to induce a migraine in him.
Rackam: What the... Noa!
Knave Leader: Bingo! Got you squirmin' in pain!
Rackam: Why, you!
Knave Leader: I-I've only used a fraction of it so far! Put the gun down! Or I'm gonna crank this thing all the way up! That'll be five times the output!
Knave Leader: You don't wanna test me! Cuz even I don't know what'll happen to your pal!
Rackam: Damned low-life sleazeball... Fine, you win. Just put the dark essence away.
Rackam puts one hand up and lowers the Benedia with the other, placing it right by his foot.
Knave Leader: Hehe... Shoulda followed directions from the get-go.
Seeing how compliant Rackam is, the knave leader snuffs out the dark essence's light.
Rackam: ...
Noa: Rackam, I'm fine. I just found it a bit noisy.
Rackam: Yeah, I figured you were made of tougher stuff than that. But I also couldn't take the chance that something might happen to you if he kept it up.
Knave Leader: Gah hah hah... You don't wanna see your buddy suffer anymore, do ya?
Rackam: Yeah, you got that right.
Knave Leader: Then you'll wanna behave yourself. As long as you promise not to get in the way of my business, I'll let you two go alive.
Knave Leader: Get up, boys! And tie those two up!
Knave: Ngh... Still hurts...
The man dangles the dark essence capsule for Rackam to see while kicking his cohorts awake.
Knave: Boss... What happened to 'em?
Knave Leader: Those two? I put 'em in their place. We're good now.
Rackam: ...
With an arm raised and a foot on the buttstock of the Benedia, Rackam glares at the enemy.
Knave Leader: Y'see? They've all but given up.
Knave Leader: They won't be a problem anymore. 'Cuz we've got a trump card in our hands.
Noa: Rackam...
Rackam: Like I said. I won't see you suffer, Noa.
The knave leader speaks to his underlings with a face of triumph—a face that distorts the moment he turns away from Rackam.
A gunshot sounds and the capsule in the man's hand ruptures, causing the dark essence to scatter into the wind.
Knave Leader: Hm?
Rackam: That's why I took it upon myself to confiscate his toy.
Knave Leader: Wha! B-but how!
Rackam: I should've put a sign somewhere banning dark essence on the ship!
Knave Leader: I can't believe it...
The man had turned his eyes away from Rackam for only a second. He had not even blinked yet.
But it was more than enough time for Rackam to kick the Benedia into his hands and get a shot off. The man failed to comprehend that.
Knave Leader: You did this?
Rackam: Sure did.
Rackam: All that target practice I did as a kid paid off big-time.
Rackam: You said you looked into us, right? Surely you heard the rumors of how the helmsman of this ship's a natural-born sharpshooter?
Knave Leader: Y-yeah...
While reloading, Rackam struts over to the man, who desperately clenches his fists with the remnants of the capsule in hand.
Rackam: We've put too much work into getting the ship running again only to have you riffraff messin' with it.
Rackam: Not to mention you tried to hurt Noa.
Rackam: I'm gonna make sure you pay for it all!
Rackam's Driving Force: Scene 4[edit]
With the knaves taken care of, Noa explains that—because the previous helmsman set the Benedia to appear only when the Grandcypher was hijacked—he had intentionally kept silent about the knaves in order to fulfill an old promise to Rackam. History of the Benedia revealed, Rackam contemplates the final moments of the previous helmsman as he steers the Grandcypher back to port.
Rackam & Knaves: Raaah!
Rackam runs out of bullets, turning the fracas into a rousing fistfight.
Knave: Boss! Now!
Knave Leader: Cocky sonuvagun!
Rackam: Oof, that smarts!
Rackam: Outta the way!
Rackam is severely outnumbered. Yet every time they put him in a headlock, he breaks out of it with a headbutt. When they grab his legs, he counters with an elbow smash.
Against all odds, Rackam manages to put up a fight.
Noa: ...
As much as Noa wants to help, he knows he shouldn't.
Rackam: ...!
His nose all bloodied up, Rackam shoots Noa a piercing gaze, suggesting to the shipwright primal that he's bent on settling the situation himself.
Noa: I wonder if Rackam was also like this on that day...
Noa: Rackam, you're hurt. Did something happen?
Young Rackam: Sorry, Noa. Some guys took the slingshot you made for me.
Young Rackam: I told the bullies to give it back. We ended up fighting when they said no...
Noa: Ah... Don't worry about it. I'll make you a new one.
Young Rackam: ...!
Noa: Rackam?
Young Rackam: No!
Noa: Huh?
Young Rackam: No! Giving up is the last thing I wanna do!
Young Rackam: ...
Boy: You again? We're not giving it back if that's why you're here. Just let it go already.
Young Rackam: Shut up! The slingshot's mine! I'm never giving it up!
Boy: Heh... It's yours if you can snatch it out of my hands.
Rackam & Boy: Hyaaah!
Rackam & Knave L.: Hyaaah!
Rackam: I am not!
Young Rackam: Giving up!
Rackam: This!
Young Rackam: Is my!
Rackam: Ship!
Knave Leader: Ngh...
Rackam: That's one tough guy down, aaand... who's next?
Knave 2: Eek!
Knave Leader: Y-you keep this up, and I'll have my hundred men aboard sink the ship!
Rackam: Really?
Noa: He's lying.
Rackam: That's too bad.
Knave Leader: Hrgh!
Rackam: Whew. What a way to leave port, huh?
Rackam rounds up the remaining knaves aboard the ship, then sets a course back to Golonzo to hand them over to the authorities.
Rackam: Any more of them left, Noa?
Noa: These should be the last of them.
Rackam: ...
Rackam: Wait, you knew from the outset, didn't you? That these guys had snuck on board.
