Thanks for Letting me Know[edit]

(Captain), Mary, and the others go to visit Galthazar in the hospital, but Mary flees when she sees the old man. (Captain) goes to comfort her, and she is finally able to make peace briefly with Galthazar.

(Captain) and the crew are visiting Galthazar, an old man they'd met in a kidnapping incident.
Since a primal beast no longer possesses him, his harsh personality has melted away, leaving a gentle old man.
Lyria: Hee-hee... Hello, Galthazar! How are you doing today?
Galthazar: Oh? Now who might you be? Have we met before?
Lyria: We sure have! I'm Lyria. We met on Sidheros Island.
Galthazar: Sidheros... Sidheros... Ah, Sidheros! My home. Were you there for the harvest? The golden wheat can be quite beautiful.
Galthazar: Hmm... Now why did I leave Sidheros again? And where am I now?
Vyrn: Well... Let's just focus on getting you fit and healthy again for now. You were possessed by a primal beast for so long after all.
Mary: ...
Any version of Mary is a crew member

Vyrn: Hey, Mary! Since we've come all the way here, why don't you come over here and talk to Gramps?
Galthazar: Who're you talking to? That child, she's—
No version of Mary in crew

Lyria: Huh? Is that Mary over there? Hey! Mary!
Mary: ...!
Any version of Mary is a crew member

Vyrn: Hey! Wait, Mary! Where are you running off to?
No version of Mary in crew

Lyria: What was that about? I thought she came here to see Galthazar...
Lyria: Hmm... She sure left in a hurry. I wonder what happened... She looked awfully pale.
Lyria: You're going to go and talk with her, (Captain)? Okay. We'll wait for you here.
Mary: Phew...
Mary: (Captain)! Did you follow me?
Any version of Mary is a crew member

Mary: I'm fine! There's just something I need to think about, so leave me alone.
No version of Mary in crew

Mary: It's nothing. There's just something I need to think about, so leave me alone.
Mary: Seriously! Why don't you, Lyria, and the lizard go drink tea with the old man!
Mary: Stupid old man...
As she's speaking, Mary slumps her shoulders and hangs her head. (Captain) patiently waits for her to continue.
Mary: Galthazar is horrible. He took in orphans just so he could raise them into a life of crime.
Mary: And then he took the money that his kids pilfered and paid off the mafia to keep them off his back.
Mary: I hate the mafia... and I hate Galthazar... That's why I ran away so long ago.
Mary: I promised myself I'd never go crawling back to him... and that vow enabled me to do everything I put my mind to.
Mary: I followed my heart and made my own decisions, which is how I fulfilled my dream of becoming a treasure hunter.
Mary: I thought I'd feel so relieved when I finally got away from that crusty old man. But...
Mary: But I didn't.
Mary: He always acted so tough, but I think in his own way he really cared for us...
Mary begins to slowly tell the tale of her life to (Captain).
Mary: I don't remember my parents. My earliest memories are of living as a street urchin.
Mary: Life was tough on the streets. Very tough. Then one day old man Galthazar found me and took me in with the other orphans.
Mary: Life was still hard, but we had a lot of fun too.
Mary: Even so, after I ran away, I didn't look back. I never even tried to contact him.
Mary: Since then I've been alone... Living off the skills that he taught me...
Mary: How to avoid shady deals, how to identify bad information, how to disarm traps, and all sorts of other stuff.
Mary: It's kind of funny to look back at how much I hated him. I wished he would've taken a long walk off a short pier...
Mary: And yet I owe everything I've become to that old man.
Mary: I just don't know anymore. Should I really hate him?
Mary: Or should I be thankful for everything he taught me?
Mary: Sob...
  1. There's no need to decide now, is there?
  2. How about giving him a good smack?

Choose: There's no need to decide now, is there?
Mary: I guess you might be right...
Mary: I mean, the primal beast is no longer possessing the old man...
Mary: He seems more absentminded now, but it's not like he's sick or anything.
Mary: Maybe I really don't have to worry about this for a while. Yeah, that seems right.

Choose: How about giving him a good smack?
Any version of Mary is a crew member

Mary: Wha? Hahaha!
No version of Mary in crew

Mary: Wha? Ha-ha-ha!
Mary: That's a little more extreme than I would've expected from you. Seriously, though, he probably wouldn't even flinch.
Mary: And if I do hit him, I'll probably just feel bad about it later. No thank you.
Continue 1
Mary: I've been holding on to these things long enough to know that the answers won't be easy to find.
Mary: But thanks for listening to me anyway. Somehow I feel safe telling you anything.
Mary: Maybe it's because you're so strange... Just kidding!
Mary: Let's get back. Lyria and the lizard will be waiting for us! And the old man too.
Having returned Mary to her cheerful self for the time being, (Captain) leads her back to Galthazar and the others.
Vyrn: Heh-heh! Take care of yourself, Gramps! We'll come see you again soon.
Galthazar: Oh, I'll be waiting. Make sure to come again when the apples have ripened. We can go pick them together!
Mary: ...
Lyria: Um... Mary?
Galthazar: Mary, what's wrong? Have you been fighting with Altos again? You shouldn't be so stubborn all the time.
Mary: ...!
Galthazar: Take good care of her, (Captain). She's a good girl at heart.
Mary: All the best... old man...
Galthazar: You too, my dear Mary. I wish you luck in your future ventures.
Mary: Thanks...
Mary leaves the hospital with (Captain) and the others without looking back.
She has finally been able to tell (Captain) of her long-held worries.
But it will be some time yet before she can completely put it all behind her.

The Beam of Light[edit]

One day Mary cheerfully invites (Captain) and the crew to go treasure hunting, promising to split any treasure with them. They agree and head for the cave where the treasure is hidden.

One slow day on the airship, Mary approaches (Captain) and the others.
Mary: Hey! If you're free right now, come with me! I just got my hands on some info about some treasure!
Mary: Some miserly rich dude apparently didn't want anyone nabbing his fortune, so he stashed it in a cave before he died.
Mary: Naturally there are traps and monsters guarding it, but I can disarm the traps, and I'm sure we can handle a few monsters.
Mary: I'll split any loot we find. So... what are we waiting for?
Vyrn: You'll share, huh?
Mary: You got a problem, lizard? What's with that face?
Vyrn: First of all, I ain't no lizard! And second of all, the thought of you sharing loot...
Vyrn: Ha-ha! Any second now, I'm sure you'll tell us it's going to snow tomorrow! Am I right, (Captain)?
Mary: Argh! I can't believe you're laughing at me too, (Captain)!
Lyria: Hee-hee... Treasure hunting is so exciting! We should go, (Captain)!
Mary: That's what I've been trying to say! Now let's move out!
And so (Captain) goes along with Mary's plan, and they head for the island where the cave is.
Mary: All righty... From here on out, we need to tread carefully!
Mary: I'm going to walk on ahead to look for traps, so only move when I give the signal! Let's go!

The Beam of Light: Scene 2[edit]

Mary senses someone in the cave and urges everyone to return to the airship, but the floor suddenly gives way, sending Mary and (Captain) to its depths. Vyrn and the others eventually come to help them, but some thugs harboring a grudge for Mary have beaten them to the punch.

(Captain) and company take down monsters and avoid traps as they head deeper into the cave, but Mary suddenly stops walking.
Mary: ...
Vyrn: What is it, Mary? Why'd you stop all of a sudden?
Mary: Sh! Quiet! Just now when we were fighting those monsters, I sensed someone nearby.
Lyria: Really? I didn't sense a thing!
Mary: Something smells fishy about this. Even the traps here don't seem to be that old. Someone might have set them recently...
Mary: I've got a bad feeling about this. Let's return to the airship. It's time to put the screws to my informant and—
Lyria: Aahh!
The cave floor suddenly starts rumbling and then splits open at (Captain)'s feet.
Mary: Crap! It must be some sort of pit trap! (Captain)!
As the floor crumbles away, Mary reaches out and grabs (Captain).
But she can't hold on to the captain with just one hand, and the pair fall into the depths of the cave.
Mary: Man, that hurt! I just can't catch a break!
Mary: That trap just now... I didn't see a switch for it anywhere. Someone must have been watching us so they could trigger it manually!
Mary: How dare they! My informant must've been in on this!
Mary: But they're the ones who are in for it now! Huh? What's that, (Captain)? Oh, I'm not hurt or anything, but thanks for asking.
Mary: I almost forgot! How about you? You didn't hit your head or anything, did you? Okay, as long as you're all right...
Mary: Dang... The rock face is just too smooth here. I don't think we can scale it.
Mary: And we could get hurt if we're not careful. Let's wait here for the rest of the crew, (Captain).
Mary: Come sit down next to me. We need to save our energy for later.
(Captain) does as instructed and some time passes.
Mary: Ha-ha! Was that your stomach making that noise just now? You hungry?
Mary: Only one thing to do then... I've got some emergency rations. Here. You can have half. Water is precious, though, so just a sip!
Mary: Hee-hee...
Mary: Huh? No, I wasn't laughing at you. It's just kind of funny...
Mary: I never used to be the sort of person to share things I consider my lifeline.
Mary: Even sitting here like this, waiting for friends to come save us... I've changed.
Mary: Oh! But don't think you're getting those rations for free! Once we get out of here, you've got some repayments to make! And I always collect!
Her cheerful voice is interrupted by the sound of hurried footsteps.
Mary: Hear that? You think it's the crew?
Ruffian: Heh-heh! Well if it isn't Mary. You miss me?
Mary: Who are you?
Ruffian: Don't screw around with me! I haven't forgotten my grudge! Get her, boys!
Vyrn: Hey! There they are! They're surrounded by some wackos though!
Mary: Nice timing, lizard! These guys are going down, (Captain)!
Ruffian: That's my line, you filthy thief!

The Beam of Light: Scene 3[edit]

The crew beats the thugs and turns them over to the island guards, and Mary thanks her friends for sticking up for her. Though Mary doesn't find any treasure this time, she finds a place beside people she can trust.

(Captain) and the crew hand the ruffians over to the island's guards, and the villains are imprisoned.
It turns out that they were once beaten to some treasure by Mary, which is the reason for their grudge.
Vyrn: Those punks! I can't believe that they would deliberately spread rumors of some treasure to lure Mary out!
Lyria: I agree! And their reason for holding a grudge isn't much of a reason at all!
Mary: Why are you all so angry? I mean, I know it wasn't cool to drag all of you into this...
Mary: But it wasn't that big a deal. Nobody got hurt or anything.
Lyria: No! It was a big deal! The only reason you and (Captain) didn't get hurt is that we got lucky!
Lyria: We need to make sure that they regret what they've done so that they never do anything like it again!
Mary: You're just too kind for your own good. Treasure hunters are always beating others to the prize or getting beat.
Lyria: But...
Mary: Still... you got angry on my behalf, so... um... Thanks.
Vyrn: Huh? Did you just say something?
Mary: Of course not! Now let's get back to the airship and take it easy.
Mary: We need to build up our strength for the next treasure hunt!
Though she didn't find any treasure, Mary's high spirits suggest that she found something even better.
The girl who once doubted anything and everything has finally discovered a place beside others she can trust.

A Scene of Family[edit]

Altos and Syr visit Galthazar in the hospital. Mary shows up late, though she had initially refused to come. Galthazar runs into her in the hospital garden, on his way to tend to his vegetable patch. The three children prepare a meal together using vegetables Galthazar grew. For the first time in a long time, the four sit down and have a family meal together.

Syr visits the hospital to see Galthazar. He finds Altos in the kitchen and decides to help out.
Syr: So the hospital staff are treating you and Gramps well?
Altos: Yeah, I think he'll be well looked after. No need to worry.
Altos: Hey, what's Mary up to these days? I hope she's not causing (Captain) any bother.
Syr: Mary's doing great! She's not being a bother... I don't think.
Syr: I asked her to come along today, but she said no.
Altos: I see. Too bad, but I get it. She probably has a lot she has to think through.
Syr: Hehehe!
Altos: What is it, Syr?
Syr: I'm just happy that you're not mad at her, that's all.
Altos: Sorry, Syr. Didn't mean to worry you.
Syr: It's fine! Anyway, let's get cooking. I wanna make something so good it'll make Mary regret not coming!
At the same moment, unbeknownst to Syr and Altos, Mary is loitering nervously in the hospital's garden.
Mary: Sigh... Well, here I am. Now what?
Mary: Hmm, I'll just go and see if Gramps is all right, then head back to the Grandcypher. Yep. Sounds good.
Mary: Let's do this!
Mary steels herself, then heads toward the hospital door. Before she can reach it, however...
Galthazar: Oh, look who it is! Mary, I'm so glad you could come!
Mary: Huh? What're you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be in your room?
Galthazar: Mary, come with me. I have to check on the vegetable patch.
Mary: G-Galthazar, hold up!
Mary: Ugh! Where are Altos and Syr, anyway?
Mary: Wow, so there's a vegetable patch in the hospital gardens. Now that I think about it, Altos did mention it in his letter.
Galthazar: Oh, stop mumbling and come help an old man.
Mary: Humph, fine! As much of a grump as ever, I see.
Galthazar: Hohoho. Just look at these bright red beauties. These'll be sweet, I'm sure.
Galthazar plucks a tomato from the plant and hands it to Mary.
Mary: Um... Ah... Thank you.
Galthazar: Hoho. I forgot, you never liked raw tomatoes, did you? You used to fight with Altos about it, as I recall.
Mary: Y-you remember that?
Galthazar: Oh yes, I remember. You two fought over everything.
Galthazar: But if you cried, Altos would feel horribly guilty, and then you'd end up comforting him.
Mary: ...
Galthazar: You should knock off all that fighting. He is your brother after all.
Mary: Yeah... sure.
Galthazar: Anyway, let's take these to the kitchen.
Mary: Altos! Syr! We got the vegetables. Where do you want them?
Syr: Mary! You came!
Altos: Hm... Looks like we should add another side to the menu. You can put them down over there.
Galthazar: Oh, barley and rice! My favorite.
Altos: Mary, I'll make the soup if you can sort out the rice balls.
Mary: I think I can handle that. Syr, can you pass the salt?
Syr: Here you are!
Mary: Gramps, do you remember when you took me in? The first meal you gave me was rice balls.
Galthazar: Rice balls, you say? Is that right? I couldn't really say...
Mary: Oh...
Syr: Ngh... How do you get the rice into that perfect triangle shape? Mine're all lumpy...
Mary: Let's see... Ah, you're holding it wrong. Here, if you hold it like this...
Altos: Heheh, I remember you used to make the weirdest looking rice balls when we were young.
Mary: Altos! Do you really need to bring that up now?
Mary: Fine, then you won't mind me telling everyone about the time you screamed beacause you thought a white blanket hanging on a coatrack was a ghost?
Altos: And... That's about ready. Not too bad, if I do say so myself.
Mary: I have to agree. I mean, I would've preferred meatballs, but still...
Syr: Hehehe!
Mary: What's so funny, Syr?
Syr: I was just thinking how long it's been since we had a family dinner together like this.
Syr: I've missed this, that's all.
Altos: Syr...
Syr: Heehee. Next time we should get Heletina and the others to join us.
Syr: Anyway, thanks for coming, Mary!
Mary: Wh-what? There's no need to thank me.
Mary: Let's just eat, before it gets cold!
Galthazar: Well said. Let's eat.
Galthazar: Hohoho. Being surrounded by such model children warms this old man's heart.
For the first time in a long time, Galthazar, Altos, Mary, and Syr enjoy a meal together.
Bit by bit, they are repairing the familial bonds that once seemed broken beyond repair.
