Background

Lancelot is currently the Captain of the Order of the White Dragons, knights who have sworn to defend Feendrache. Originally he had been Vice Captain of the Order of the Black Dragons, the previous Order, but through a devastating chain of events, he rose in rank when his former Captain and mentor, Siegfried, was forced to flee. Now in a position of higher responsibility in a time of turmoil, Lancelot sheds his former mischievous personality and assumes the role of a perfect chivalric knight.

Prior to the events of Defender's Oath, Lancelot and Vane were neighbours and childhood friends from the same remote village. Due to their distance from the capital and, consequently, the knights' protection, Vane's parents were killed by wyverns, and Vane's ensuing grief motivated Lancelot to become a knight. However, the Order was vastly in favour of recruiting nobility, and without the same privileges, Lancelot had to essentially teach himself and Vane. As a result of King Josef's policies and Siegfried's intervention in his almost failed admission exam, Lancelot eventually procured a recommendation and successfully joined the Order with his renowned talent, despite his circumstances. Thereafter securing his place, Lancelot continued to climb in rank until he became Vice Captain of the Order of the Black Dragons, sharing the position with Percival. Maintaining an equal rivalry with his fellow Vice Captain, Lancelot idolised his Captain Siegfried, complimenting his awkwardness with his natural charisma. These idyllic times would soon collapse when Siegfried was accused of regicide and forced to flee.

Unaware of the machinations behind-the-scenes, Lancelot became the Captain of the newly reorganised Order of the White Dragons, composed of the remnants of the disgraced Order of the Black Dragons. The events of Defender's Oath transpire, and Feendrache is thrown into upheaval as Lancelot learns of the secrets behind the Order's reorganisation. Despite any further plots against his beloved kingdom, Lancelot makes the effort to rebuild every time, even temporarily travelling with the Grandcypher crew to learn more about the outside world. As part of his desire to overhaul the education system and reform the Order, Lancelot revises their application process to make them more impartial, aiming to judge candidates on their chivalry instead of their lineage, bolstered by his own background as a commoner who managed to become Captain. This in turn grants Arthur and Mordred the opportunity to join the Order in Divergent Knighthoods.

Personality

Lancelot is noble and diligent, the perfect image of a knight. Even as children, Lancelot would play with Vane and still manage to read vast quantities of books. His persistence in learning lead to his reputation as a prodigy, earning him favour and accolades that helped him rise in rank despite his commoner origins.

Despite his natural talent for swordsmanship, Lancelot holds insecurities about the meaning of chivalry, especially considering the circumstances behind him becoming Captain at his young age. His tendency to mull on his own self doubt, combined with his fervent doggedness, means he can easily lose sight of himself. His hidden stress frequently manifests as a messy room, which Vane ends up having to clean, who, in turn, encourages Lancelot to vent out his troubles. Aided by Vane's rise in rank to become his Vice Captain, Lancelot learns the importance of confiding and leaning on others.

Before being placed in a position of responsibility, Lancelot had been much rowdier, cracking jokes and frequently getting into fights with his fellow knights. Sometimes, this playful side of him still slips out when he is away from his duties, and is easily seen in his excitement to play tricks on Halloween. However, he hides this from his subordinates lest his professional image be torn, and appears embarrassed when Vane brings up his mischievous past.

Relationships

  • Vane: childhood friend, neighbours from the same village, acts as both his confidant and Vice Captain. They often work in tandem.
  • Siegfried: was one of his Vice Captains when he was Captain of the Order of the Black Dragons. Both mentor and idol, and thus felt deeply betrayed upon his flight from Feendrache. After their reconciliation, returns to idolising him.
  • Percival: fellow Vice Captain during the Order of the Black Dragons, equals even up to him leaving the Order.
  • Team Chickadee: their superior as Captain of the Order.
  • Charlotta: fellow Captains of chivalric Orders, who came to know each other during their time on the Grandcypher crew.

Trivia

Etymology

  • Wogenstrom is German. "Wogen" translates to "billow" or "wave" while "Strom" means "current" or "stream".
    • Weissfluegel, or "Weißflügel", means "White Wing(s)"
  • Lancelot's name is based off of the Lancelot of Arthurian Myth. Sir Lancelot du Lac (of the Lake) was a knight of the round table and King Arthur's greatest companion.

An Unyielding Spirit[edit]

Lancelot blames himself for the disaster that befell the capital, and Percival calls him a coward to try to rouse him up. Lancelot reflects on how the two brothers-in-arms became rivals, and being back with Percival seems to make him feel better.

After rescuing Lancelot from the capital, (Captain) and company take shelter in a small village.
Lancelot hangs back in the room alone, a sour look on his face.
Lancelot: Humph.
Percival shows up with the rest of the crew in tow.
Percival: Have you calmed down a bit, Lancelot?
Lancelot: Percival...
Percival: What's with the long face?
Lancelot: It's my fault that disaster befell the capital. Am I supposed to look happy at a time like this?
Percival: But your crying is hardly going to bring the city back to life now, is it?
Lancelot: I know... I know that. But still...
Vyrn: Come on now, Lancelot. You can't blame yourself for what happened.
The dejected Lancelot looks anxiously toward Percival.
Percival: Tch. I was only gone a short while, and you've turned into a complete coward.
Lancelot: ...
Percival: Humph... If this is how you end, then this is how I'll remember you.
Percival: But don't worry. I'll take care of all the big boy work. You stay here and play with that blockhead of a vice-captain.
Percival makes to leave the room.
Lancelot: Watch your tongue, Percival.
Lancelot: Say what you will about me, but leave Vane out of this.
Percival: Or else what? Are you gonna make me shut up?
Lancelot: If I must.
The crew rushes in to try and defuse the explosive situation.
Percival: Ha. I'd like to see you try.
Lancelot: What?
Percival: But winning against the pitiful husk of a man you are right now wouldn't mean anything.
Percival: Once the dust has settled, we can settle our business.
Lancelot: Percival, you...
Percival: If you're hearing me at all, rest up at least until we leave. I don't want you getting in the way.
Percival leaves the room.
Vyrn: Why can't you guys just say what you want to say?
Lyria: What did he mean by our business?
Lancelot speaks up, breaking the silence that has fallen over the crew.
Lancelot: It goes back to the days before Percival left us.
Lancelot: Back then we were co-vice-captains of the Order of the Black Dragons, fighting for the position of captain.
Lancelot: But then... Well, you all know what happened next.
Vyrn: Oh, you mean when the old king got... um... his early retirement.
Lancelot: Yes. That's what triggered it.
Lancelot: I chose to fight for my country, and he chose to fight for his ideals.
Lancelot: The day he left, we... We challenged each other—and each other's ideals—to a secret duel.
Lyria: So when Percival said our business, he meant...
Lancelot: I suspect that he meant finishing that duel from all those years ago. I'll admit neither of us expected it to end in a draw.
Lancelot stares at the tips of his swords.
Lancelot: But, however much he gets on my nerves, it's not like I hate the man.
Lyria: Hee-hee. Yeah. I guess you might say he's genuine, sort of like a gentle flame.
Lancelot smiles as he recalls something.
Lancelot: That's right. Did he ask you to become his vassal, (Captain)?
Vyrn: Wow, I guess he really does say that to everybody...
Lancelot: Ha-ha, so he did? He only asks people who he deeply respects, you know.
Lancelot suddenly shifts to looking far more serious.
Lancelot: (Captain). I want to thank you for reuniting me with him.
Lyria: Don't mention it. We're just happy to be back here again!
Vyrn: Heheh, it was nothing! C'mon, where's that smile of yours?
Lancelot: Thank you. Talking to you guys somehow makes me feel a bit better.
Lancelot: Now, as much as it pains me to say that he is right, we do need to get some rest. Tomorrow's a big day.
(Captain) and company rest up in preparation for the next day.
Thanks to the kindness of his friends, Lancelot finally seems to be on the mend.

In the Fury of Battle[edit]

(Captain) and company are helping Lancelot rebuild the capital. A knight of the White Dragons tells them a supply caravan is being attacked by monsters, so the crew goes to help.

Some time has passed since the incidents with Isabella and Gareth, and peace has returned to the royal capital of Feendrache.
Monsters rampaged through the town, and Lancelot is leading the reconstruction efforts.
Lancelot: I'm really sorry to drag all of you into this, (Captain).
Lyria: No, it's fine! We'd love to help you if we can. Just tell us whatever you need!
Vyrn: Yeah! You've been working nonstop without a break, Lancelot! You thought we wouldn't notice?
Lancelot: Heh... Thanks, everyone.
Vyrn: So where should we start?
Lancelot: Let's see... The construction materials should be delivered to the capital today.
Lancelot: It would actually be great if you could help transport them.
A knight of the White Dragons suddenly runs over, gasping for breath.
The knight tells them that the caravan has been surrounded by monsters and is now stuck en route.
Lancelot: Then we don't have any time to waste.
Lancelot: Sorry, (Captain), but I need you and your crew to go rescue them at once!
Vyrn: Just leave it to us! We'd better hurry, (Captain)!

In the Fury of Battle: Scene 2[edit]

After rescuing the caravan, the crew returns to the capital to find Vane working with carpenters and Percival arguing with a law-breaking merchant. When Lancelot questions him, the merchant flees, and (Captain)'s crew runs after him.

(Captain) and company rescue the caravan.
After returning to the capital, they deliver the construction materials to the carpenters.
Vane: Hey there! If it isn't Lancey, (Captain), and the gang!
Lancelot: Vane? What are you doing?
They find Vane and his subordinates working up a sweat right alongside the carpenters.
Vane: Hah hah hah! Well, you know, I've never been much for just sitting back and dishing out orders!
Vane: You think there's something wrong with me helping?
Lancelot: N-no... Not at all! I was just surprised.
Lancelot: Heh... I guess I should have known you'd jump in, Vane.
Lancelot smiles at the sight of everyone working together to finish the reconstruction.
Lancelot: So how's everything going anyway? Any problems?
Vane: Nope! As you can see, we're making steady progress. Thanks to everyone's help, we should be finished here real soon!
Lancelot: Glad to hear it. We'll be heading off now.
Vane: Cool, cool. Don't work too hard now, Lancey!
(Captain) and company say goodbye to Vane and resume their patrol of the city.
They suddenly hear a man shouting angrily.
Greedy Man: What's your problem, punk? You got something to say to me?
Percival: Humph... Don't snarl at me. I've gotten reports that your store's exorbitant prices are rankling the people.
Greedy Man: Aw, buzz off! I have the right to set my own prices, you know!
Percival: Indeed. But in times like these, don't you think we ought to work together and help each other?
Ruffian: Get out of here with that namby-pamby nonsense! If they don't like it, they can go to another store!
Percival: Hm... Also true. That's completely reasonable.
Percival: But matters of this sort tend to rub people the wrong way, negatively impacting morale and thus affecting the reconstruction.
Greedy Man: Are you trolling me, punk? Take your philosophizing elsewhere!
Lancelot: Percival! What's going on?
Percival: Oh, Lancelot. Perfect timing.
Percival: I was engaging this man in conversation, but he doesn't seem to understand my point.
Lancelot takes one look at the man and comes to a realization.
Lancelot: You there... I don't recognize you. Who gave you permission to set up shop here?
Greedy Man: Tch... You people are really on my case today.
The man empties his money box and takes off running.
Lancelot: Hey! Wait!
Lancelot: Percival! You run around and block him from the other side!
Percival: Very well... I guess some people just refuse to listen to reason.
Percival: In that case, I'll need your help, (Captain).

In the Fury of Battle: Scene 3[edit]

The crew captures the law-breaking merchant, but the incident stirs up more unrest among the citizens. Lancelot continues to work hard, but the ongoing decline of the country takes a toll on his spirit.

Working together with Percival, the party manages to capture the greedy man.
Witnessing this, the citizens begin to voice their concern under their breaths.
Townsman: Sigh... We never used to have scumbags like that in town.
Townswoman: Hmm... It feels like the capital's gotten more dangerous lately. I don't feel safe.
Lancelot: ...
Percival: What's wrong, Lancelot?
Lancelot: Oh, it's nothing. More importantly, have you seen Siegfried around by any chance?
Percival: Hmm... Siegfried? I think he left the capital on other business.
Lancelot: I see...
Percival: Did you need him for something?
Lancelot: No, it's okay. Thanks, Percival.
Percival: Don't mention it.
Lancelot: Now then, let's keep patrolling the town, (Captain).
Vyrn: All right! Time to put in a little more effort, everybody!
Lyria: Yeah! Let's go, (Captain)!
With some support from his good friends, Lancelot continues to work hard to rebuild the capital.
However, unbeknownst to him, his tough mental fortitude is wearing away bit by bit.
