Gawain hails from the Duchy of Dalmore, a small country on the same island as Feendrache and Wales. It had a weak military and was frequently assaulted by thieves, but Gawain was its saving grace. With his strength, he could single-handedly take down armies and rally Dalmore's troops. Thanks to him, Dalmore was able to maintain order and secure peace treaties with Wales and other neighboring countries, and Gawain received the epithet "hero of Dalmore".

However, Gawain's unrivaled strength soon got to his head. Knowing that nobody would dare oppose him—nor had the strength to—he became a tyrant who abused and even killed Dalmore's citizens without a care. Quickly all the admiration people felt toward him morphed into fear and hatred. After some time, the king decided that there was no option but to execute Gawain.

One woman stood against the king's decision, though; Gawain's older sister and court sorceress Florence. In order to lighten his sentence, she convinced the king to leave Gawain to her. Disguising herself as a wandering sorceress, she provoked Gawain into a duel and prevailed. She cursed his armor so that he would not be able to remove it until he had done enough good deeds and redeemed himself, thus sending him on an unofficial exile from Dalmore as he sought ways to remove this curse. It is during this journey of his that he comes across and joins the crew.

Admonishing Armor[edit]

A monster attack brings the crew face-to-face with Gawain, a knight in shining armor who's protecting the village. Learning he is cursed to wear armor until his good deeds outweigh his sins, (Captain) offers Gawain a spot on the crew.

The party stops by a village for a well-deserved break. The large group of monsters there has other plans.

A lone knight in armor stands to defend the panicked villagers from the monsters.

(Captain) and company rush to offer their assistance.

Katalina: Whew, looks like we got rid of them.

Villager: Ah, travelers! You've chased off the monsters! We can't thank you enough.

Katalina: As long as you're safe. As for that knight...

Armored Knight: ...

Vyrn: Hey! You're not hurt, are you? You've got some impressive moves!

Armored Knight: You...

Vyrn: ...?

Armored Knight: How dare you! You've really gone and done it now!

Vyrn: Huh?

Armored Knight: I could've defeated those monsters myself. The villagers would be thanking me instead. Humph.

Vyrn: What are you trying to say?

Katalina: Being thanked is your reason for helping people? Well, color me shocked.

Armored Knight: Oh, shut it! What the hell do you know? Gah!

Vyrn: H-hey! Are you hurt or something?

Lyria: His armor... There's something strange about it...

Armored Knight: It's the curse. I have to—Agh...

Katalina: Have to what? Why don't you tell us what's going on.

The armored knight goes by Gawain. He tells the crew of his armor, of his curse.

Long ago he'd been a prideful lad. He challenged a sorceress to a duel and was struck with a curse.

There is only one way to lift the curse. He would have to perform selfless deeds, as the only cure for a big head is a generous heart.

And so, with those words ringing in his ears, Gawain begins to hop from island to island on his journey of atonement.

Vyrn: So you have to reflect on your pride by helping people...

Gawain: I can break the curse if people feel like I helped them... But you had to go and mess it all up!

Vyrn: Wait a second! Do you know how you sound?

Katalina: I think you'd better get used to that curse. It's going to be there for a while.

Gawain: What?

Katalina: Do you feel like you've even come close to getting rid of it since you started this whole thing?

Gawain: Gah! Shut up! What the hell do you know about anything? Go on, just keep running your mouth!

Lyria: H-hey, you two! Just hold on a minute! I think I have an idea!

Lyria: Gawain... Why don't you come with us?

Gawain: Wait, what?

Lyria: We're, um... We're skyfarers. We're traveling the world.

Lyria: We might be able to find a way to lift the curse if you come with us...

Lyria: And think of what would happen if we ran into some big monsters. You'd be a lifesaver... Right, (Captain)?

1. We could use a strong guy like you.
2. We want to help.

Choose: We could use a strong guy like you.

Gawain: Humph, fine. If you say so...

Gawain: Besides, this probably counts as a good deed... Sure, you'll have my help.

Gawain: You? Help me? Talk some sense, will ya?

Katalina: I'm not sure what kind of a curse you have, but I don't really think you're in a position to say no.

Gawain: Ack, shut up! Damn it! I... I guess I have to...

Vyrn: Umm... I've kinda been wanting to ask, but don't you think you're missing the point?

Gawain: What point?

Vyrn: Your pride. If you ask me, that's what it all comes down to.

Gawain: My pride? Hah. Are you calling me proud? It's the right of the strong to look down on the common rabble. Am I wrong?

Gawain: Enough gum flapping. (Captain), you're the leader, aren't you? Show me to your ship. And be quick about it.

Katalina: My money's on the curse staying around for a while.

Vyrn: Ugh... He's a jerk, but at least we know he's tough.

Lyria: We'll do lots of good deeds and rid Gawain of his curse!

Bound by his curse, the armored knight Gawain joins our heroes. They set off into the sky once again.

Whether his freedom will ever come remains to be seen. Of course, changing his mindset is going to be the biggest hurdle.

A Trial of Compassion[edit]

(Captain) and company hear of a magic stone said to work on Gawain's curse. They enter an ominous forest in search of it.

If you want to dispel the curse, help people and change your arrogant ways.

A knight with cursed armor, Gawain, accompanies (Captain) and company in their journey.

A merchant they come across speaks of a magic stone that works on curses. The crew heads into a dark forest in search of the stone.

Katalina: Ugh... The miasma here makes it difficult to breathe...

Lyria: That's not all. I feel a bizarre magical presence too...

Vyrn: Hey, (Captain). Do you think we can trust what that merchant said?

Vyrn: A magic stone that just so happens to work on the armored guy's cursed armor seems a bit... You know...

Rackam: It seems highly suspicious that some merchant passing by knows about the curse anyway.

Rackam: Maybe we should just go to town and help people to—

Gawain: You people need to know when to shut up.

Rackam: What!

Gawain: Are you afraid? Humph... Coward. If you're afraid, then go home. I'll do this alone if I have to.

Rackam: C'mon now, we're worried about the curse placed on you.

Monster: Grrr!

Katalina: There they are. Be careful. Those are no ordinary monsters.

Gawain: Humph... These monsters don't even make for a good warm-up. At least they'll take the dust off my axe!

A Trial of Compassion: Scene 2[edit]

The miasma-filled forest reeks of danger. Though Gawain's pride forces him forward, the magic of the forest resonates with his curse, inflicting pain on him.

Monster: Graaagh...

Katalina: Phew... The miasma seems to be making the monsters fiercer here.

Lyria: There's something weird about this forest. It feels like it's being distorted with magic power...

Gawain: Humph.

Vyrn: Hey, wait! Gawain!

Rackam: Gawain, don't go on your own. With all this miasma, who knows what lies ahead?

Gawain: If you don't want to come, then go home. I already told you that.

Rackam: Gah! Why are you like this? You should listen to others for once!

Rackam: I never said I didn't want to come along. I just said you should be careful because it's suspicious...

Gawain: Shut up! I'm strong! I don't need you to worry about me! Ugh...

Vyrn: H-hey! What's wrong?

Gawain: Nothing...

Monster: Grrrr...

Katalina: Gah! Again? Let's go! Don't let your guard down!

A Trial of Compassion: Scene 3[edit]

Feeling pain from his curse resonating with the forest's magic, Gawain still refuses help from the crew. (Captain) urges Gawain to trust in his friends.

Gawain: Huff... Huff...

Vyrn: Hey, Gawain. You look pale...

Gawain: Gah!

Katalina: Gawain? Hey! Snap out of it!

Gawain: Urg... The curse...

Lyria: Maybe the magic of the forest is affecting Gawain's curse...

Katalina: Oh no! It's a trap! But how did that merchant know?

Monster: Grrrr...

Rackam: Tch! What horrible timing!

Gawain: Hey! Forget... about me!

Gawain: This... has nothing to do with you! Go away!

2. Trust in your friends.

Choose: I can't do that.

Gawain: Huh?

Gawain: Why? You have nothing to gain from helping me!

Katalina: I'm stunned beyond belief by how much of a fool you've been.

Gawain: Fool?

Rackam: We help people because we want to. That's all the reason we need.

Lyria: It's okay. We're strong. So you can believe in us.

Vyrn: Yeah! We'll be here to support you!

Vyrn: Let's go, (Captain)! We'll beat down the curse and the monsters!

A Trial of Compassion: Scene 4[edit]

The crew finds a magic stone deep in the forest, but it does nothing for Gawain's curse. Although still angry with the sorceress who placed the curse on him, Gawain is grateful for the crew's help.

Lyria: The miasma and magic filling the forest are dispersing!

Katalina: It seems the danger has passed.

Vyrn: Oh, look! Isn't this the magic stone the merchant talked about? Hey, try touching it.

Gawain: R-right...

Vyrn: Well? Did the curse disappear?

Gawain: It's no good. Nothing's changed.

Rackam: Cripes! I thought it sounded like nonsense!

Katalina: But why would that merchant try to throw us off?

Gawain: I felt a tinge of the same aura from that merchant as the sorceress who placed the curse on me. Maybe they're working together to test me...

Gawain: Damn it! They made a fool out of me!

Rackam: That's all the more reason to dispel the curse and overcome.

Vyrn: That's right! We'll show them who's boss!

Katalina: Hey, we're talking about the sorceress who defeated Gawain. It won't be easy to—

Gawain: Hey...

Rackam: Hm?

Gawain: I appreciate your help.

Katalina: ...!

Gawain: C-come on! Let's go! We're going to town to help people in need.

Gawain: Unlike you people, I don't have time to play around.

Vyrn: He's not honest with himself... I wonder how long it'll take him to get rid of the curse.

Lyria: But it feels like...

Vyrn: Hm? What's wrong?

Lyria: No, it's nothing... It's time to go help people!

On the one hand, Gawain strives for his unfinished dream. On the other, he tries to dispel the curse. While helping those they can, the crew's journey continues.

It's not until later that the crew notices someone watching over them from deep in the forest as the curse's effect slightly softens.

Showdown with the Curse[edit]

Gawain carries an old woman who was injured during an accident at the mountains. On their way to the village, the crew notes a certain kindness about Gawain, even if he is as foulmouthed as ever.

One day, an accident befalls a stagecoach headed toward a mountain village.

(Captain) and company pass by and decide to help the people stranded there with the broken carriage.

As they escort the people to the village, Gawain carries an old woman injured during the accident.

Gawain: Cripes, why am I stuck doing this?

Old Woman: I'm sorry to be a burden, young man...

Gawain: Heh, if you're really feeling sorry, then don't waste your breath talking.

Gawain: It's only more trouble for me if you pass out from exhaustion.

Old Woman: Why, thank you...

Gawain: Tch, what's keeping you guys? Hurry up already!

Rackam: Geez. Arrogant as ever, eh?

Katalina: I think he's much better now than when we first met him though.

Vyrn: That's true! Sure, he still complains a lot, but at least he's focused on helping people!

Gawain: Enough! I'm only doing this to break the curse.

Gawain: Like hell I'd be doing this if it weren't for that!

Vyrn: Hehe! Yeah, yeah, we know.

Gawain: Are you mocking me?

Katalina: Let's simmer down, everyone. Escorting the villagers to safety comes first.

Gawain: Humph... Hm?

Gawain senses monsters approaching.

Monster: Groar!

Gawain: See what happens when you guys keep yappin'?

The irked Gawain gently lets the woman down.

Gawain: Stay behind me and do not come out if you want to live!

Showdown with the Curse: Scene 2[edit]

When the crew escorts the villagers back safely, Gawain finds he can now remove his gauntlets—but only his gauntlets. He hears the voice of the sorceress who placed a curse on him asking him to come find her at the Duchy of Dalmore.

Having wiped out the monsters, the crew safely escorts the villagers to the mountain village.

Villager: Thank you so much, everyone. What can we do to repay you?

Rackam: No, no, it's okay! We're just glad you're safe.

Gawain: Don't even bother. It's not like you'd be able to do anything for us at a shabby ol' village like this anyway.

Katalina: Ah, I apologize for his brash language. Please don't take it personally.

Old Woman: Heheh, I know he's really kind at heart.

Gawain: You're free to think of me as you will. Just don't go pushing it on me.

Gawain: If you've got energy for yappin', then save it for your injuries.

Old Woman: Hehe, you're too kind.

(Captain) and company look on with smiles at the boorish, but caring Gawain.

Gawain: What are you looking at?

Lyria: Ah, sorry, Gawain! We're not trying to make you mad!

Rackam: Jeez, take it easy already.
Anyway, where can we find a tavern around here?

Villager: There's a tavern right this way, sir!

Rackam: All right, let's rest up there then. You're coming along, right Gawain?

Gawain: Humph...

Hesitant to follow the crew to the tavern, Gawain sighs and gives in.

As he takes a step forward, his armor suddenly feels different.

Noticing how lightweight his armor now feels, Gawain tries to take off his gauntlets.

Gawain: Huh?

The gauntlets, which had always clung to his arms like ivy, come right off.

Gawain: Has the curse... been lifted?

Feeling hopeful, Gawain tries to remove his armor, but nothing more than the gauntlets come off.

Gawain: What's happening to me? It doesn't seem like the curse has been broken.

Gawain is further confused when the fleeting voice of a woman resounds in his head.

???: (Congratulations. Your gauntlets are off. Looks like you've been building up the good deeds as I instructed.)

Gawain: That voice... It's you!

Gawain vividly remembers the voice of the sorceress responsible for placing the curse on his armor.

Sorceress: (Don't yell. It'll only draw unnecessary attention. Besides, I can hear your thoughts just fine.)

Gawain: (What do you want?)

Sorceress: (No need to be alarmed. I only came to tell you that you might be able to break the curse.)

Gawain: (Do you take me for a fool? Break this curse now!)

Sorceress: (I must make physical contact with you to remove the curse.)

Sorceress: (Meet me at the Duchy of Dalmore, where you once lost to me.)

The voice fades away.

Gawain: Humph, the Duchy of Dalmore...

Concerned about Gawain, Lyria and (Captain) walk out of the tavern.

Lyria: Is everything okay, Gawain?

Gawain: It's none of your concern. Weren't you two taking a break inside?

Lyria: We were getting worried because you didn't show up.

Gawain: Heh, I don't need you to worry about me.

Lyria: But...

Gawain: Tch, we're going in. Stop sulkin' and start walkin'.

Lyria: Ah, okay!

Gawain accompanies them into the tavern.

The crew decides to stay the night in the village.

That night, Gawain walks out of the inn after making sure everyone else is asleep.

Gawain: They'd just get in the way. I have to do this alone.

Gawain sets out for the lands where he once experienced defeat to confront his past.

Showdown with the Curse: Scene 3[edit]

Gawain finds the sorceress waiting in a large, open room in Dalmore Castle; and as promised, has his curse removed. But not one to let bygones be bygones, he charges furiously after her.

Having left the crew behind, Gawain arrives at the Duchy of Dalmore.

Gawain: ...

Feeling awkward at the sight of the peaceful city streets, Gawain continues onward.

Citizen 1: Hey... Isn't that Gawain?

Citizen 2: What! Gawain has returned? Oh my...

The townspeople look on in fear at the sight of Gawain.

Citizen 1: Why has he returned?

Citizen 2: You expect me to know? What'll we do if he ends up staying?

Citizen 1: Please don't say that. I'd rather not think about it...

Gawain: ...

Gawain treads along, paying no heed to their intimidated voices.

Shortly after, Gawain arrives at Dalmore Castle.

The gatekeeper yelps in panic at the sight of Gawain.

Gatekeeper: G-G-Gawain, you've returned! I-I shall inform the king at once!

Gawain: Heh, I didn't come to see that old fool. I have some unfinished business to take care of.

Gatekeeper: Unfinished business?

Gawain: Tell everyone in the castle. If you want to live, stay the hell away from my room.

Gatekeeper: A-at once, sir!

After watching the gatekeeper run off, Gawain lets out an exasperated sigh.

Gawain: Well, time to go...

Gawain proceeds along the castle halls and opens a large set of double doors.

Standing inside is a masked sorceress with a mysterious air about her.

Sorceress: I've been waiting, Gawain.

Gawain: You got me good back then.

Sorceress: It was all a misunderstanding. I came to the Duchy of Dalmore merely for sightseeing.

Sorceress: It was you who pointed your weapon at me for sport.

Gawain: You set those traps to take me down, yet you call yourself a tourist?

Gawain: But enough about the past! Free me of this wretched curse already!

Sorceress: As prideful and arrogant as ever even with your restraints. Perhaps that's what makes you who you are.

Gawain: Cut the crap already!

Sorceress: Calm down. I'll remove the curse now.

The sorceress approaches Gawain and touches his armor.

Gawain immediately tries to strip himself of the armor.

Gawain: Hah, looks like I'm finally free of the curse.

Sorceress: I keep my promises.
Well then, I'll be off now...

Gawain: Ha, haha, bwahahaha! I've waited long enough for this moment!

Sorceress: !

Gawain pulls out his axe and strikes her down in an instant.

The sorceress goes crashing to the ground with a loud splash.

Gawain: Did you really think I would forgive you? Like hell I would!

Gawain: That's what you get for placing that damn curse on me!

Sorceress' Voice: Then consider this retribution.

She vanishes, only to be replaced by numerous magic circles scattered across the room.

A huge swarm of familiars rise from the magic circles and rush Gawain.

Familiar: Gwaaaaar!

Gawain: Heh, looks like you had this room booby-trapped after all. Why don't you take me head-on, sorceress scum!

Sorceress' Voice: You had such potential, Gawain. It's a real shame.

Gawain: Yeah! It's a shame I didn't get to cut you down, all right!

Gawain: Just you wait! You're next after I take out these familiars!

Showdown with the Curse: Scene 4[edit]

Gawain swings his axe wildly, but stands no chance against a sorceress with no physical form. She places an even stronger curse on him, and urges him to learn of the warmth in people's hearts to break the curse.

Gawain: Raaah!

Familiar: Skree!

Gawain: Hah, is that all you've got?

The sorceress's voice echoes across the room in response.

Sorceress' Voice: You truly are a fearsome one, hero of Dalmore.

Gawain: You impudent. Do not call me by that name!

Sorceress' Voice: Oh? I'm only trying to stroke your ego.

Sorceress' Voice: You've used your monstrous strength to save your country countless times and coerced the Wales Family into an alliance.

Sorceress' Voice: Doing so brought everlasting peace to the country, as no one would dare make an enemy of you or the Wales Family.

Sorceress' Voice: Make no mistake, Gawain. You are a true hero.

Gawain: Shut your trap, damn it!

Gawain swings his axe in a crazed frenzy.

His wild swings tear the air, from which the sorceress manifests.

Sorceress: ...

Gawain: This is the end!

Gawain immediately swings his axe again, but the sorceress just as quickly disperses into a misty shadow that wraps around him.

Gawain: Ugh, cough... Curse you...

Sorceress' Voice: This feels like deja vu. Have you learned nothing since we last fought?

Gawain: Silence! You're not going to beat me again!

Gawain musters all of his strength and tries to shake off the shadow.

Gawain: Huff... Huff... Ugh!

Sorceress: Hm, I might have to take that back. To think you've learned to break my spell through power alone.

Gawain: Huff... Puff! This ain't over yet...

Staggering, Gawain tries to lunge at the sorceress but merely trips and falls.

Gawain: Unh, damn it! I can still fight!

Sorceress: No, it's over.

The sorceress places her hand on Gawain's head, after which he finds himself completely immobilized.

Gawain: Ergh...

Sorceress: I have but one question, Gawain.
Why did you come alone?

Gawain: They'd just get in the way if I brought them!

Sorceress: No, Gawain. That's not true.

Gawain: What would you know?

Sorceress: I'm sure you can feel it now, Gawain.

Gawain: I've had enough of your drivel! Get the hell away from me!

Sorceress: ...

Sighing in pity, she rubs Gawain's armor.

Gawain writhes in agony as his armor begins to shine.

Gawain: Ungh, no! You... can't...

Sorceress: I've placed the curse on you again. Only this time, it is considerably stronger and will not be broken through good deeds alone.

Sorceress: Only when you've come to understand the warmth in people will this curse come off, Gawain.

With that, the sorceress vanishes into thin air.

Gawain: The warmth in people? Humph...

Gawain: Why! Why must you obsess over me, of all people?

Gawain: Why?

Gawain screams at the top of his lungs, and quickly loses consciousness.

???: ...

Little does Gawain know that others were watching the entire time.

Sincerity[edit]

Soldiers holding a grudge seize the opportunity to attack an injured Gawain. Meanwhile, a woman proclaiming to be the Court Sorceress of Dalmore appears before (Captain) and company.

Freed from his curse, Gawain once again engaged the sorceress in battle.

Unfortunately, having been defeated once more, an even stronger curse was placed on him.

Shortly after the sorceress leaves the scene, Gawain awakes from slumber.

Gawain: Damn it...

Faced with the bitter sting of defeat, Gawain gets up and totters out of the room.

Meanwhile, (Captain) and company continue their search for Gawain, who had left without saying a word.

Rackam: Geez, where did he run off to now? We're not making any headway here.

Lyria: Is Gawain really gone for good?

A heaviness fills the air when no one feels confident to answer. Just then, (Captain) notices a dimensional rift opening in front of him.

Katalina: W-what is that?

As the crew stares at the rift, a woman wearing a mask slowly comes into view.

Sorceress: ...

Lyria: Yikes! Is that... a ghost?

Katalina: Who are you?

Sorceress: ...

The woman gently nods at the alarmed crew.

Sorceress: You must be the crew led by (Captain).

Katalina: How is it that you know (Captain)'s name?

Sorceress: Please settle down, everyone. I bear no ill will.

The woman quietly removes her mask and hood.

Florence: I am Florence, Court Sorceress of Dalmore. It's a pleasure to meet you.

Rackam: The pleasure is ours. So, what could a court sorceress possibly want with us?

Florence: I am here to both apologize and explain myself. And selfish as it may be, I also have a request to make.

Katalina: I still don't understand the situation. Can you tell us more?

Florence: That knight in red armor that you are all searching for?

Florence: I am the one who placed the curse on him. I am also his older sister.

Rackam: What! You're Gawain's sister? It's all coming together now!

Rackam: No, wait... Why would you place a curse on your own brother?

The voice of the confounded Rackam echoes through the forest.

Meanwhile, an injured Gawain limps out of the Duchy of Dalmore.

Gawain: Huff... Huff... Damn it!

Gawain: Don't talk to me about the warmth in people, you blasted sorceress!

Footsteps approach as Gawain agonizes over the turn of events.

Gawain: I'll only say this once: turn back now if you want to live.

Vengeful Soldier 1: We cannot turn back.

Vengeful Soldier 1: Your weakened state now is our chance for revenge.

Gawain: ...

Vengeful Soldier 2: You may not remember us...

Vengeful Soldier 2: But we'll never forget the terrible things you've done to us!

Vengeful Soldier 1: Prepare yourself!

Gawain: Mwahaha, pitiful fools.

Vengeful Soldier 1: What?

Gawain: Even with my injuries, you pathetic rabble won't be able to touch me.

Gawain: I'm feeling pissed, and you two are going to pay for it!

Sincerity: Scene 2[edit]

Florence reveals herself to be both Gawain's older sister and the one who placed a curse on him. After learning the truth behind Gawain's past, the crew runs to his rescue at the castle.

(Captain) and company stop by the inn to have a chat with Florence.

Rackam: We had no idea Gawain had a sister.

Vyrn: Yeah, come to think of it, he never did talk about himself much.

Katalina: You mentioned a bit earlier that you placed a curse on him?

Florence: Yes, it's true.

Rackam: But why would you do that to your own brother?

Florence: I'm going to tell you everything. Please listen to my story.

Florence: What I'm about to say is very important—both to you, and to Gawain.

(Captain) nods in response.

Florence: I serve the Duchy of Dalmore, a small country often under attack from thieves and neighboring countries.

Florence: Fortunately, we have successfully fended them off every single time.

Rackam: Hm, the military might of Dalmore must really be something.

Florence: Yes, well, I can both confirm and deny that.

Vyrn: Huh, what does that mean?

Florence: Dalmore's military is actually quite weak.

Florence: But Gawain was always the antithesis of that.

Florence: Watching him take out hundreds of soldiers single-handedly inspired bravery in the rest of us.

Katalina: I knew he was strong, but I never imagined he could take on entire armies by himself.

Florence: Word of his military prowess spread across to other nations. Even high-ranking nobility, in fear of Gawain, would come to us with peace treaties.

Florence: That, is how Gawain brought everlasting peace to Dalmore.

Vyrn: Wow! Gawain is totally the hero of Dalmore!

Florence: Yes. However, many within Dalmore feared and even despised him.

Lyria: Why would people hate the hero that protected them?

Katalina: Was Gawain's personality the problem?

Florence: That's exactly it. Gawain's arrogance grew with every victory and every feat.

Florence: He began to act freely, taking advantage of all the respect and fear he commanded.

Florence: With all that he had done for the country, no one felt comfortable speaking up—not even the king.

Vyrn: It's really something when even the king is afraid to speak out...

Florence: Things may have turned out okay if he had just continued acting all high-and-mighty, but...

Florence: Having grown tired of the peace, he began to fight skyfarers and his own knights to pass the time.

Florence: The people of Dalmore bled and suffered under his cruel ways.

Florence: Any who spoke up would be purged by Gawain himself.

Katalina: That's no different from a tyrant.

Florence: Well, actually... Gawain is...

Florence: No, you're right. At least in the past, Gawain was definitely a tyrant.

Florence: One day, the king finally decided it was time to put him away.

Vyrn: Put him away? As in execution?

Florence: Yes, but I stood against it. I felt Dalmore still needed Gawain to prosper.

Florence: And despite how oppressive he may have been, he was still my dear little brother.

Lyria: Florence...

Florence: I pleaded with the king to reconsider his decision if I could make my brother change.

Florence: The king agreed.

Florence: I later disguised myself as a traveling sorceress, and with preparations in place, provoked Gawain.

Katalina: You must've figured he would respond in kind.

Florence: Yes, the prideful Gawain immediately swung his axe at me and thus began our battle. I came out victorious.

Florence: I proceeded to place a curse on him, admonishing him to perform acts of kindness outside of Dalmore, and to keep his arrogance in check.

Rackam: So the curse was meant to help him?

Florence: Yes. And just now, I placed an even stronger curse on his armor.

Vyrn: Huh?

Florence: I sensed that he had reflected upon his arrogance and regained part of his better self.

Florence: But he still fails to understand the warmth in people.

Florence: If he can come to grips with that, the curse will come apart at once.

Florence bows before the crew.

Florence: Please, teach him the warmth that people possess.

Florence: Considering how long you've traveled together, I'm sure you'd be able to get through to him. Please...

Rackam: Heh, you really care about your little brother, don't you? No need for formalities. We'll do it.

Vyrn: Leave it to us! He's our good friend after all!

Florence: Thank you so much, everyone!

Katalina: Hehe, no worries. It's the least we can do as his friends.

Katalina: Let's get back to Gawain now. Do you know where he might be, Florence?

Florence: Yes, I'll need a moment to sense his energy.

Florence closes her eyes in concentration.

Florence: I found him. He's in a forest near the Duchy of Dalmore.

Florence: Oh no! When did they notice? I must get to Gawain at once!

Florence suddenly vanishes.

Rackam: Whoa, what was that all about?

Vyrn: Whatever happened just now can't be good.

Katalina: The forest near Dalmore is close. Let's hurry!

(Captain) nods and the crew takes off after Gawain.

Gawain: Raaah!

Vengeful Soldier 2: Unh, you monster! How are you still at full strength?

Vengeful Soldier 1: No, he's definitely weaker! Keep at it!

Gawain: Huff... Huff... You worthless scum dare to oppose me!

Vengeful Soldier 2: Ggrraaah!

The soldier's attack lands on Gawain's crimson armor with a metallic clang as Gawain loses balance.

Gawain: Ungh! Damn it, how could I.!

Vengeful Soldier 2: Hah, this is payback for everything! Your time's up!

Before the soldier can land the fatal blow, his sword is parried by another.

Gawain: I-It's you!

(Captain), having repelled the sword, gives the surprised Gawain a reassuring smile.

Katalina: Whew, that was a close one. It wasn't easy finding you.

Gawain: I never asked for your help! Get out of here, now!

Gawain: Ngh...

Gawain writhes in pain from shouting.

Rackam: Hey, take it easy now. It's okay to rely on us sometimes.

Gawain: Huh?

Katalina: I don't know if you've realized, but you've protected us countless times.

Vyrn: Sure, you did it to break free of your curse. But we're still here now thanks to everything you've done for us!

Lyria: So now it's our turn to protect you!

Gawain: Huh... (Did I really protect them?)

Florence: I have but one question, Gawain.
Why did you come alone?

Gawain: They'd just get in the way if I brought them!

Florence: No, Gawain. That's not true.

Gawain: What would you know?

Engulfed by the curse, Gawain begins to think.

With their eyes fixed on the crew, the soldiers ready their swords for battle.

Vengeful Soldier 2: Tch, who'd have thought Gawain would have allies...

Vengeful Soldier 1: Please fall back! We have no business with you!

Rackam: Hah, we're gonna stay right here. None of us is cowardly enough to throw a friend to the wolves.

(Captain) nods in agreement, and readies their sword.

When Gawain hears that the crew fights to protect him because they're friends, he gains newfound strength and ends up protecting (Captain).

Vengeful Soldier 2: Cripes... The reinforcements are taking too long!

Rackam: Hm, there's more of you?

Vengeful Soldier 2: Hah, it's not just us soldiers who want payback on this miserable wretch!

The enraged soldier lunges at Gawain, still unable to move.

(Captain) moves in to deflect the blade.

Gawain: Take them out now! Why are you guys holding back?

Gawain: Don't worry about me, you fools!

Rackam: Yup, yup, we're fools. There's no way we'd let you get caught up in it all.

Gawain: Why! Why would you go this far for me?

Katalina responds to the bewildered Gawain while fending off enemy attacks.

Katalina: Like we've been saying, it's because we're friends!

Gawain: Friends?

Gawain: You would consider me a friend? I...

Gawain: (Could it be that I've always wanted to protect my friends, and I've been doing so subconsciously?)

Gawain: (I came here alone seeking the sorceress... Was that my way of protecting them?)

Vengeful Soldier 2: Now!

Vyrn: Uh-oh! (Captain)!

The soldier strikes the second (Captain)'s attention is diverted to the confused Gawain.

Vengeful Soldier 2: Gah!

(Captain) is safe, thanks to Gawain getting back up to deflect the attack.

Rackam: How did you... I thought you were—

Gawain: Humph, I got tired of watching you weaklings fight.

Gawain: (Captain)! Did you really think you could protect me?

Gawain: Ridiculous! I'll be doing the protecting here! I always have, and I always will.

Gawain: I've got you covered, (Captain)!

Surprised at Gawain's refreshing new attitude, (Captain) is ready to reenter the battle.

Sincerity: Scene 4[edit]

The moment Gawain thanks the crew for everything they've done for him up until now, his curse is lifted and the mask comes apart. Gawain and Florence enjoy a long heart-to-heart talk, at the end of which he promises to one day come back a much better person—one that will truly benefit the Duchy of Dalmore.

With Gawain joining the fray, the crew makes short work of the soldiers.

Rackam: Whew, we finally took them out. But with all our talk about protecting Gawain...

Katalina: Gawain ended up protecting us instead. Thank you, Gawain.

Gawain: ...

Lyria: I just hope we didn't get in the way.

Gawain: No need for apologies. As for you all getting in the way... Ha, don't make me laugh.

Gawain: If you guys hadn't come, they would've wiped me out.

Gawain: Besides, I should be the one thanking you.

Gawain: So this is the warmth in people. Heh, you guys certainly have it in you.

The crew looks at the abashed Gawain in disbelief.

Rackam: Is everything okay, Gawain? Did you hurt your head back there?

Gawain: No, you dimwit! Are you mocking me?

Vyrn: There he is! That's definitely Gawain, all right!

Gawain: Heh, if you say so. I'm not so sure I'm the same though.

Lyria: Huh?

Gawain smiles slightly and turns to look at the crew.

Gawain: I want to thank you all. For bringing me along in your crew, and for everything that's happened so far. Really, thank you.

Something astonishing happens as soon as Gawain finishes thanking them.

Lyria: Gawain!

Gawain's mask detaches itself and falls to the ground.

Vyrn: Th-the mask! That means your curse...

Gawain: It's broken. Come with me. There's something I need to confirm.

The crew follows behind Gawain.

(Captain) and company arrive near the Duchy of Dalmore.

Soldier in Pain: Ngh, can't move...

Soldiers and thugs bound by magic all stand unable to move.

Gawain: This magic...
It's all coming together now.

Gawain: I'm going off for a bit, (Captain). There's something I need to settle alone.

Gawain continues toward the Duchy of Dalmore.

Gawain enters his own room to find a masked sorceress lying in wait.

Florence: Gawain, do you now see the warmth in people?

Gawain: Let's cut the act already, Florence.

Florence: ...

Florence removes her mask and hood.

Florence: So you knew, Gawain.

Gawain: I was too lost in anger and hate to realize it, but...

Gawain: You're the only sorceress who'd want anything to do with me.

Gawain: I appreciate you stopping those soldiers and thieves out there.

Florence: No. I deserve blame rather than thanks.

Florence: I was so focused on our battle I didn't realize the soldiers were watching us.

Florence: I apologize.

Gawain: Don't be sorry. My foolish arrogance got us into this mess in the first place.

Gawain: And I understand now. You placed the curse on me out of kindness.

Florence: Gawain...

Gawain looks at Florence apologetically.

Gawain: I want to apologize for my foolish behavior up to this point. I hope you can forgive me.

Gawain: I was so intoxicated with power I didn't care what people thought anymore and lost touch with their warmth.

Gawain: I've caused the people of this country, the king, and especially you, my dear sister, so much pain.

Gawain: Forgive me.

Florence sheds a tear at Gawain's sincerity.

Florence: You've really changed.

Florence: Gawain, this country needs you. You will always be its hero.

Florence: Although the soldiers revolted, I'm sure the king and the people of Dalmore will forgive you if they see how much you've changed.

Gawain: No, not yet.

Florence: But why...?

Gawain: I'm still crude in many ways. I can't guarantee I won't lose myself and cause trouble for the country again.

Gawain: Besides, my friends have done so much for me. It's only right that I repay their kindness.

Florence: I see... Then I only ask that you promise to return one day.

Gawain: Once I've become a man truly worthy of this country, I will be back.

Gawain: Thank you for everything, Florence. Until next time.

Gawain exits the room.

Florence: I'll always be waiting for you, Gawain. Stay safe.

Florence prays for her beloved brother's safety as he walks away.

Curse These Curses![edit]

A chance meeting brings Gawain and Lennah together to talk about their curses. Lennah says it's given her an appreciation for what many take for granted, while Gawain believes there's no upside whatsoever to their situation. Eventually he admits her words ring with a certain truth and starts to see his life in a different light.

Lennah is strolling around town one day when sounds of a quarrel enter earshot.

Lennah: Oh? And what do we have here?

Hooligan 1: Some fancy armor y' got there, bud. Bet you're loaded with gold. How 'bout I help take some of that weight off you?

Gawain: Begone. Why should I give coin to the likes of you?

Hooligan 2: Heh. Looks like this one's a little slow. Let's knock some sense into 'im!

Lennah: Now, now, boys. Let's all get along.

Lennah's wand traces a curve in the air and a strong wind follows. The men suddenly find themselves buried in a sea of flowers.

Gawain: Hm? Flowers? What's the meaning of this?

Lennah: Pretty, aren't they? Doesn't it just make you oh-so-happy?

Hooligan 1: What the? The heck are you doing!

Lennah: Oh, don't be angry. Try smiling instead!

Gawain: Wait, I recognize you... You're from my crew.

Lennah: That's right. And you should try smiling too, Gawain. It's good for you.

Hooligan 1: Tsk. Called your friend, did ya? This ain't worth it. C'mon, we're getting out of here.

Lennah: Aww. Going without saying goodbye? And here I thought we were friends.

Gawain: Stop right there, fools! Don't think I'll simply let this slide!

Lennah: That's right. You should shake hands and make up.

Gawain: What're you talking about? A beating is what they need! A beating!

Lennah: Now, now. Watch that temper, Gawain. You're scaring them. Here, just relaaax.

Hooligan 1: Yeeep! I... I can't move! I'm sorry, I'm sorry! I'll apologize!

When Lennah lays her hands on the ruffians, they stretch out their hands with unnatural obedience.

A reluctant Gawain follows suit when Lennah takes his hand.

Lennah: There we go. Not so hard, is it?

Hooligan 2: Gods... Why do I gotta shake hands with this scum...

Gawain: I should be the one saying that!

Lennah: What's going on here? I thought we just made up? Maybe we need more flowers to help.

Hooligan 1: Eek! N-no, ma'am. No more flowers! We're sorry! Just let us go! Please!

Gawain: Tsk... Get out of my sight. As much as I hate you, I'm starting to hate these flowers even more.

Hooligan 1: Th-thank you.

Lennah: Hehe. Shy one, aren't you?

Gawain: Wait. Where are you going?

Lennah resumes her stroll as if nothing had happened.

Spreading flowers on the bleak scenery along the way, she is followed by the clanking of Gawain's armor.

Gawain: Just what were you trying to accomplish back there?

Lennah: Hmm? You mean the peacemaking?

Gawain: Yes, that. They were trying to pick a fight with me.

Gawain: I should have taught those two a lesson! Not given them handshakes!

Lennah: Mmm. You may be right. But you never know; maybe they had their reasons.

Gawain: Humph. Reasons? Why should I care? They should have left me out of it.

Lennah: Gawain. You've made peace with them and shaken on it. No need to hold a grudge.

The corners of Lennah's lips pull back into a gentle smile. And in the palm of her hand she makes a tiny flower bloom.

Lennah: Here you go. A brand new flower fresh off the Lennah!

Gawain: Wha...

The stunned Gawain receives the flower into his hands without thinking. He stands stock still, contemplating what had just transpired.

Lennah: Hehe. It suits you.

Gawain stares sidelong at Lennah as she goes about sprouting flowers by the wayside.

Gawain: Will you cut that out? This is a road, not a flower garden.

Lennah: Sorry, no can do. If I stop making flowers, I'll turn into a tree.

Gawain: Hm? A tree? Is that supposed to be funny?

Lennah: Hehe. True as true can be, I'm afraid. You've seen the branches on my arms, haven't you? Oh my, I think it just grew a little.

Lennah tells the story of how she contracted a curse that binds her to keep creating flowers, lest she be turned into a tree.

Ailed with a curse himself, Gawain starts to sympathize with her. Soon his temper subsides.

Gawain: Humph. You should have said so earlier. If that's the case, I'll suffer the sight of your flowers.

Lennah: I'm so glad you understand, Gawain. Thank you.

Gawain: Tsk. Don't be mistaken. This doesn't mean I have to like it. I simply know firsthand how terrible a curse can be.

Gawain tells of the sorceress who cursed his armor and condemned him to suffer until the curse is broken.

Lennah: Why, that sounds just awful. Bath time certainly can't be easy.

Gawain: It isn't. I have to sleep like this too. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to sleep in armor?

Lennah: For me I need to wake up throughout the night to make flowers. I haven't had a good, long sleep in ages.

Gawain: I know how you feel.

Lennah: Hehe. But I've gotten used to it. I've had it since I was a little girl, after all.

Gawain: Humph. I hate to admit it, but I've gotten used to my curse as well. I still want nothing but the spell broken though.

Lennah: Oh, yes. That certainly would be nice.

The two continue exchanging their everyday woes and inconveniences brought about by their curses.

Gawain finds a special kind of comradery in his new friend.

Gawain: So... what would happen if you ever do turn into a tree?

Lennah: Hmm, I guess I wouldn't be able to move anymore. Oh, and monsters would eat me. That won't be very nice either.

Gawain: What? So not only do you turn into a tree, but you die as well. That sounds far worse than my curse.

Lennah: Well, I don't know about that; we might be comparing apple trees to orange trees there. You're right though. Turning into a tree would spell the end for me.

Gawain: How can you be so nonchalant about all this? Your life is in constant danger!

Lennah: Hehe. It's a serious problem all right. But it's not all bad.

Lennah: Now I'm able to make lots and lots of flowers. Isn't it wonderful?

Gawain: Are you being serious? Has the constant threat of doom made you lose your mind?

Lennah: Hehe. Who can say? I certainly hope not.

Lennah puts a hand on her cheek and giggles. Gawain stares at that
never-changing smile and ventures a question.

Gawain: Don't you feel any despair at your situation?

Lennah: Hm? Despair?

Lennah gives a blank stare for a moment. Then, realizing the answer he's looking for, she narrows her eyes ever so slightly.

Lennah: It's true; there was a time I cried every day out of fear. For the first few years at least.

Lennah: But I knew crying wouldn't solve anything. The tears stopped eventually.

Gawain: Hm... You just... gave up?

Lennah: I didn't give it much thought at the time, but yes, perhaps I did.

Gawain: But why? Don't you want to find the one who did this to you? Take revenge?

Lennah: Hmm, perhaps. I honestly don't think it matters anymore.

Lennah: But I realized... While it's easy to wallow in sadness when misfortune strikes, it's even easier to just be happy.

Gawain: Hm? Wh-what do you mean?

Lennah: Hehe. Tears come unbidden when you're sad, but isn't it just so tiring? By the time you're done, your head hurts and your eyes are all puffy.

Lennah: But when you're happy, you smile. And when you smile, your heart starts to feel light and all your pains just fade away.

Lennah: Yes, my curse can be troublesome. Yes, it took a few things away from me. But I don't have to let it take my happiness.

Lennah: So you see... I don't think myself misfortunate at all.

Gawain: No, that's the very definition of misfortune. You're suffering more than others are. That's what the word means.

Lennah: Oh, so you regard yourself unfortunate then?

Gawain: Of course I do... Just look at all the humiliation I have to suffer.

Lennah: Is that so? You don't seem that unfortunate to me.

Gawain: Don't be absurd!

Gawain: I have a curse! I'm cursed! What part of that don't you understand?

Lennah: Hehe. I've never seen someone so eager to say they're miserable.

Gawain: Wha!

Lennah: You know what's great about my situation?

Lennah: I've learned to appreciate even the smallest things in life.

Lennah: And if I can help someone else appreciate that little bit of everyday happiness, that makes me all the happier.

Gawain: Fool's talk! How can that be happiness! Flowers can't bring happi—ngh!

Lennah: Are you all right? Where does it hurt?

Gawain: Ngh. Pay no mind. It's because of my curse. I'm used to it.

Gawain: Sigh... How can you say any good can come of this.

Lennah: Well, I'm sure there's something that we've realized that no one else has.

Gawain: Whatever that is, I don't know it. There is no silver lining in this, I assure you.

Gawain: This curse has done nothing but make me long for the everyday life I'd taken for granted.

Lennah: There you go! A silver lining if there ever was one!

Gawain: Humph. Maybe you're right. Maybe I have gained something from all this suffering.

Gawain: But if you think I can accept that someone can be happy in this state, that's another matter entirely.

Lennah: Are you saying I'm only pretending to be happy? Just putting on a brave face?

Gawain: No! That's not what I meant! It's just... well...

Gawain: Everyone feels a little bit of negativity toward their situation. Just admit it. It's okay to be a little selfish sometimes.

Lennah: Oh, selfish, you say?

Lennah: Hehe, how kind of you, Gawain. Seems there's a warm heart pumping all that hot blood.

Gawain: M-make no mistake! It's just because I can't stand seeing you act the way you do!

Lennah: Well then, because you're so kind, maybe I should indulge you with a selfish request.

Lennah: Get me a teacup. I hear (Captain) needs a new one.

Gawain: Sigh... This is what you call being selfish...

Gawain: Humph. You really are something.

Lennah and Gawain. Each with their own burden, each with their own way.

Having gained new insight into the life of a fellow curse-bearer, they each re-examine the lives they lead, and what they wish to make of it.
