Some time prior to the war between the Sky Dwellers and the Astrals, Cagliostro lived as a sickly boy close to death. With the aid of her younger sister, she pursued methods to avoid her early demise regardless of how the people in village thought. After many failures, Cagliostro was able to create a new female body and transferred her soul into it. That wasn’t the end. She refined the technique and kept at her research, coining the term “Alchemy,” thus becoming the founder of the practice. Word spread as Cagliostro made her art grow, garnering awe and even disciples wishing to learn from her.

Cagliostro taught her younger sister alchemy and she continued to research with her aid. The younger sister, as talented as she was with destruction alchemy, had no interest in the immortality Cagliostro had created for herself. Once she settled down with a husband and children, Cagliostro’s sister retired from alchemy. In return for her help and out of affection for her little sister, Cagliostro bought a secluded island for her to live out the rest of her days in peace. Eventually, she was put to rest there.

One day, Cagliostro was approached by the Astrals and was promised great power in exchange for following their commands. It is unclear whether this happened before her sister’s death but Cagliostro declined and soundly trounced the Astrals when they tried to force the matter. That was not the last time Cagliostro had come to odds with others due to her infamy.

The Alchemists of Helmuth, using the image of Cagliostro’s sister as their symbol, would corner Cagliostro. They found that Cagliostro had become too wild in her actions, sullying the name of her own practice. This guild utilized their founder’s main weakness, destruction alchemy. Before she was sealed away for countless years, Cagliostro vowed to return and make heads roll.

Personality

Though her body may be tiny, Cagliostro sports an incredibly huge ego. The primary source of praise for her intellect, beauty, and power is herself. Many times, the millennia old alchemist points out the perfectness of herself to other people.

To match with the appearance of her youthful artificial body, Cagliostro raises the tone of her voice and acts the part of an adorable little girl. She even adds to it with items such as dolls or stuffed animals, aiming to fluster and beguile her audience. Cagliostro’s narcissism often shines through, jumping to the conclusion that a stranger approached her to ask her to be their poster girl in one instance.

The true Cagliostro is quick to insult, very forceful, and enjoys using violence to solve problems, to punish, or just uses it as an outlet for her easily lit temper. Outside of the crew, Cagliostro tends to talk down to the general populace and is annoyed by their low intellect.

Despite Cagliostro’s often depraved behavior and immoral means of feeding her ever present hunger for knowledge, there is a caring and fiercely loyal side to her. After traveling with the crew for some time, Cagliostro is willing to throw herself into harm’s way when Lyria or Main Character is in danger. Though, Cagliostro either doesn’t mention anything regarding it or plays it off by saying that she had an ulterior motive. It can be unclear whether this is the truth but as time goes on, Cagliostro herself admits that she has grown soft and aids the crew when she doesn’t stand to gain anything. Along those lines Cagliostro holds deep affection for her family. She became enraged when the Helmuth guild created lies about her sister, and is a strict but patient mentor to her niece, Clarisse. In rare instances, Cagliostro can become flustered with those she is close to after they display their affection to her through words or actions.

Dilemma of a Genius[edit]

Cagliostro struggles alone in her room, trying to find a way to heal Ouroboros' wounds; she regains her composure after speaking to (Captain).


The crew heads for the location mentioned in Deliford's epistle.
Inside the Grandcypher racking her brain is Cagliostro, powerless after suffering a brutal enemy attack.
Ouroboros: ...
Cagliostro: Hm, maybe I should try mixing in some gold.
Ever since the attack, Ouroboros's body has been gradually collapsing from within.
Cagliostro searches for a way to heal Ouroboros, trying her hand at different alchemic formulas.
Cagliostro: How about this?
Cagliostro: That didn't work either, so something must be wrong with the core...
As Cagliostro sighs and clutches her head in confusion, someone knocks on the door.
Cagliostro: Hm? Oh, it's you guys. What's up?
Vyrn: Heyo. You've been cooped up in your room for so long—we thought we'd come check up on you.
Lyria: Yeah... You didn't look too well, so we just wanted to make sure everything's okay.
Cagliostro: Well, I'm perfectly fine. But...
Cagliostro looks at Ouroboros with a tinge of desperation.
Cagliostro: I realized something was wrong when I couldn't bend Ouroboros to my will.
Vyrn: Now that you mention it, Ouroboros isn't looking too hot.
Cagliostro: I gave him a body like a worm as a base—and just tacked on bones and muscles on top of that.
Cagliostro: Something must've gone wrong back there. Would explain why I can't heal him.
Vyrn: Um, you kinda lost me there... Something wrong with his body, I take it?
Cagliostro: I created Ouroboros ages ago. Honestly I simply didn't know any better at the time; but looking back, that was one kooky experiment!
Cagliostro: With my injuries right now, I don't have the capacity to figure out this thing's spaghetti-like body.
Cagliostro: Damn it, this just ticks me off! I'd fix him up in a heartbeat if I were my usual self!
Vyrn: Uh-oh... I've never seen Cagliostro like this...
(Captain) and the others are most startled to see Cagliostro kicking and shouting with such acrimony.

Cagliostro clutches (Captain)'s arm and looks up at him excitedly.
Lyria: Agh! Cagliostro! What are you doing to (Captain)!
Cagliostro: Ehehe... (Captain)'s so nice—I just wanted to feel his warmth up close!
(Captain) considers the best possible way to react to Cagliostro's sudden advances.

As if responding to Cagliostro's beaming face, (Captain) gently tilts her chin to look her directly in the eye.

Vyrn: Whoa! I think something's about to go down here!
(Captain) and Cagliostro gaze into each other's eyes.

(Captain) cries in pain after Cagliostro gives him a forceful flick on the nose.

Choose: Pinch her nose.
Unable to think of anything more creative, (Captain) resorts to pinching Cagliostro's little nose.

With his grip still on her nose, (Captain) proceeds to gently tilt her head further and further back.
Cagliostro: Hiieee! S-stop it!
Lyria: Yikes! (Captain), that's going too far!
Seeing Cagliostro so frantically squirm, Lyria hurriedly goes in to push back (Captain).
Cagliostro: Urk! Grr, how dare you even try that on me!
Cagliostro: ...
A seething Cagliostro suddenly turns silent.
Vyrn: I'm sure (Captain) was only playing around. I hope you don't take it personally, Cagliostro.
Cagliostro: Uh-uh, it's not that. I'm surprised how cute my voice sounded just now.
Lyria: Huh? That's what's on your mind?
Cagliostro: Hiiee! Hiee...
Urgh, that super cute voice isn't coming out!
Cagliostro: I'm giving you special permission to pinch my nose again, you brat! Go on—you know you want to!
(Captain)'s little prank seems to have piqued Cagliostro's curiosity.
And thus (Captain) ends up accompanying Cagliostro in her gotta-get-that-super-cute-voice-back experiments.

Despite her energetic mouth, Cagliostro is visibly fatigued.

The world-renowned genius Cagliostro is no doubt distraught at being caught defenseless against such a sly move.
(Captain) realizes what Cagliostro is feeling and takes it a step further.
Cradling Cagliostro's head, (Captain) gently whispers, "Don't fight it."
Cagliostro: ...!
Cagliostro at long last calms down.
Lyria: Huh? Cagliostro? Is everything okay?
Cagliostro: It's nothing. And back off already, (Captain). You're making it stuffy in here.
Cagliostro: Well, enough of that. Time to get back to restoring Ouroboros.

Choose: Stroke her hair.
(Captain) begins to straighten Cagliostro's ruffled hair.
Cagliostro: What's the big idea?
(Captain) remains silent, continuing to straighten her hair with a pleasant smile.
Cagliostro: Humph.
Cagliostro looks away in embarrassment but shows no signs of resistance.
Cagliostro: (Oh, she got me good! Her smile's actually really cute now that I've seen it up close...)
Cagliostro: (I'll get you back for this... Just wait till I'm back in tip-top shape—I'll be flashing you the cutest cute smile you'll never forget!)
Cagliostro: Well, enough of that. Time to get back to restoring Ouroboros.

After hearing their footsteps fade away, Cagliostro opens her mouth.

Cagliostro: But you know I'd never do that. I am the awesome creator, the founder of alchemy—and I'm going up to live up to that name.

A sincerity that she has never shown anyone else flashes across her face.

Teaching alchemy to the senseless Clarisse turns out to be no easy feat. Cagliostro opts for a more hands-on lesson and summons a horde of goblins for Clarisse to decompose.


Cagliostro trains Clarisse in alchemy so that she may help reconstruct Cagliostro's body.
But teaching one as forgetful as Clarisse proves to be an extraordinary challenge.
Cagliostro: Equivalent exchange!

Clarisse: Fweh... I don't know what to say; I just don't get it! Now what's with this equal exchange thing?

Clarisse imitates Cagliostro's steps in decomposition and reconstruction, but she fares poorly. Cagliostro recalls that her first alchemical success resulted largely from the fear of death, prompting her to threaten to chop off Clarisse's legs as an incentive to do well.


Clarisse: Huff... Puff... Will this do?
A huge pile of goblin dust lies before them.
Cagliostro: Hm...
Cagliostro scoops up a handful of dust and observes it intently.
Cagliostro: Not bad. Next step...
Cagliostro: Get ready for Cagliostro's personal home cooking class!
Cagliostro: We'll start by practicing the creation of a new bodily vessel for Cagliostro!

Praised for her triumph in alchemizing a bizarre yet stable lump of meat, Clarisse gains the confidence to see this lesson through. Meanwhile Cagliostro wishes there were things other than alchemy that she could leave behind.


Cagliostro: Aaargh! No, no, no! You need to consider the physical properties of the material!
Clarisse: Mm... But I am!
Tears well up in Clarisse's eyes as she desperately fiddles with the material. She appears to finally get the knack of it after some time.
Clarisse: Ah! You mean like this?
The dust piles up like never before. She adds a smidgen of heat with accompanying sparks for the final touch.
Clarisse: ...
Cagliostro: ...
What appears before them is a most bizarre-looking lump of meat unrecognizable to even Cagliostro.
Cagliostro: What the... You better not tell me you were imagining me when you constructed this.
Clarisse: Um, well... Ahem...
Clarisse: Eeek! No, please, Cagliostro! Won't you forgive me just this once? I really, really prefer my legs to be intact!
Cagliostro: Haha, I was only pulling your leg... Whatever it is you concocted here, it's still holding up after this many seconds... Not bad at all.
