Linear referencing is the method of storing geographic locations by using relative positions along a measured linear feature.

Esri's help pages explaining Linear Referencing and the Linear Referencing Toolbox. There is a separate set of closely related tools in the Location Referencing toolbox that gets unlocked by ArcGIS Roads and Highways and ArcGIS Pipeline Referencing so those questions are included here too.
