Information following a person's full name that provides additional information about the person. The most common use is a generational suffix used to distinguish persons who share the same name within a family.

In English, the common generational suffixes are descriptive words, Senior and Junior, or Roman numerals indicating birth order. Note that the words may be found abbreviated as Snr and Jnr or as Sr and Jr (with our without a full point punctuation).

Other European languages use terms such as père ("father") and fils ("son") [French] or Filho (son), Neto (grandson), and Sobrinho (nephew) [Portugese] as name suffixes.

Suffixes may be used formally in a Will to remove ambiguity or informally to avoid confusion when discussing families.

Some genealogists will use a name suffix to show post-nominal letters signifying academic achievement, professional accreditation or other honors.

Are suffixes like Jr. and Sr. ever used to distinguish e.g. grandson and grandfather?

The most common Junior and Senior combinations are father and son, but what about in other contexts, such as grandson and grandfather (assuming that they have the same name)?
