Questions tagged [gedcom]

For questions about the use of GEDCOM files, the de facto standard file format for exchange of genealogical data. GEDCOM is an acronym for GEnealogical Data COMmunication.

GEDCOM (an acronym for Genealogical Data Communication) is a plain text file format developed by the LDS Church to exchange genealogical data. The data is structured in a lineage-linked model, consisting of individual (INDI), family (FAM), and source (SOUR) records.

The latest version used by most genealogy programs is GEDCOM Standard 5.5.1 (1999), although this technically is still a draft specification.
