I've been a writer for 15 years, mainly ghostwriting articles on the web or in magazines as well as line/style editing of fiction.

In my opinion the best writing is that which places the story directly into the reader's mind, causing said reader to forget they are only looking at letters on a page. Exact syntax has it's place and should always be followed - until it gets in the way, at which point I believe it's best to just write.
