Questions tagged [terms-of-venery]

This tag is for questions about collective nouns for animals, and similar fanciful collective nouns for people and other things.

Terms of venery started as a trend in the 15th century of fanciful collective nouns. Being associated with hunting culture, they were largely coined for different species of game animals and fowl, but examples covering types of people and other things were in existence from the very beginning of the form.

They mostly died out of use following the initial fad, but were much revived in the 19th century.

Was "ugly" ever a word meaning a group of walruses?

A Google search for ugly of walruses yields many results mentioning the word as an item of trivia. But I've yet to discover a single source actually using the word. Did it in fact ever have that meaning?
