Use this tag for questions about slashes, especially their usage, placement, and nuance.

The slash is a typographical symbol in the 'shape' of an oblique line; they can be slanted to either the right or to the left. The left-slanted version [\] is commonly known as a backslash, while the right-slanted version [/] is known as a forward slash.

The forward slash is used in several contexts:

  • To replace an 'or' in a sentence to indicate there is more than one option | The mute/silence key is one of the function buttons.
  • For fractions | 3/8 = three-eighths
  • To replace the 'per' in abbreviated ratios | 10 m/h = 10 miles per hour
  • In abbreviations | n/a = not applicable
  • In dates to separate units of time | 03/10/2008 = March 10th, 2008 / October 3rd 2008
  • In URLs | https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/slash

The backslash's use is limited primarily to mathematics and computing.
