My parents’ divorce was final. The house had been sold and the day had come to move. Thirty years of the family’s life was now crammed into the garage. The two-by-fours that ran the length of the walls were the only uniformity among the clutter of boxes, furniture, and memories. All was frozen in limbo between the life just passed and the one to come.

Someone told me that it means there is a pile of wood planks or boards piled in that house, but I think the phrase is used to describe the materials of which the wall is made.

What does it really mean?

    Interestingly as a native speaker I do think there is an ambiguity in that passage. My first guess is indeed that it refers to the framing material of the garage (imagining there is no drywall or plaster finish covering the walls - the structure is exposed, common in garages). It is also possible to read this passage as indicating that there is a stack of cut lumber in the garage along one wall forming the most ordered part of the room's contents. That would be a slight non-sequitur, though, so your interpretation seems likely to be correct. – Darren Ringer Jul 20 '17 at 20:48

You've hit on one of those wonderful terms that is not transparent to the learner, yet used on a daily basis by some people. :)

Please note that it isn't too hard to find this in a dictionary. In fact, it's also on Wikipedia. Consider checking available resources before asking a new question.

It does refer to the boards of lumber used to frame the wall, as is commonly done in North America. (It would be surprising if they were in a pile. We don't associate piles with uniformity and order.) Each plank is two inches thick, four inches wide, and a variable number of feet long.

You can also generalize this term: 2x6, 4x4, etc. The first number is always the thickness of the plank and the second one is the width, both measured in inches.

Sometimes there's a third number: 2x4x8. The third one is the length, and is measured in feet, at least in North America. (Including here in Canada, despite our affinity for the metric system!)

As the Wikipedia blurb mentions, though, in reality these boards are half an inch less in both thickness and width, an amount lost during sizing and planing. (This is also true of other sizes than 2x4, but as Jasper mentions in the comments, the amount differs depending on the original size of the board and the country in which this is taking place.)

At the store your question might be: "Can I get a couple of six-foot two-by-fours in spruce?"

    It's worth noting that lumber like this is usually used to frame a building and is later covered with sheets of drywall to finish the interior. Because the 2x4s are exposed, the room described in "Limbo" is unfinished, like many inexpensive storage areas. –  Jul 20 '17 at 13:51

    Thanks. I ask such a question because I am not living in the US and has difficulty to reach the rich resources you mentioned. The above paragraphs was actually used as original texts for a translation competition in China which drew quite a number of contestants. One of the judges of the competition in his comment of the translation did tell us that there was a pile of woods stored in the garage according to the text.     @NanningYouth Well, that's funny. I mean, perhaps with more context we would see that the family has piles of wood perfectly measured to "run the length of" each wall, but it seems very unlikely! As Mike says, it's common to have the walls of a storage space like a garage be simply the wood frame with nothing more on the inside.     When using American dimensional lumber (such as two-by-fours), the thicknesses and widths of the lumber are consistently less than the nominal dimensions. In theory, this accounts for the thickness and width that are lost when shaving away rough material, and for how much a sliced up tree shrinks before it becomes useful lumber. A two-by-four is 1 1/2 inches thick by 3 1/2 inches wide. A four-by-six is 3 1/2 inches thick by 5 1/2 inches wide. An eight-by-ten is 7 1/4 inches thick by 9 1/4 inches wide. The actual dimensions vary slightly, depending on the moisture content of the wood. – Jasper Jul 20 '17 at 15:32

    R&B Builders in Montana posted this picture of an unfinished garage. It shows two-by-fours spaced sixteen inches apart (measured from the center of one vertical "stud" to the center of the next vertical "stud"). This arrangement is common in the United States. Many garages also have "unfinished ceilings", with "roof trusses" or "ceiling joists" or "rafters" showing. R&B Builders later finished this garage. – Jasper Jul 20 '17 at 15:51

    One complication of the description you give is that you might be talking to a UK English speaker. In the UK, we frequently describe the cross section of timber in inches (modulo the "nominal" vs "regularised" discrepancy as mentioned by @Jasper above) but the length is more often given in metres. So your example of a 2x4x8 would often be 2x4x2.4 instead. BTW, your image appears to be a pile of 1x4s, which could be confusing to the uninitiated. 2x4s are much chunkier, and are the general size of timber that is commonly used for building timber frame walls. – Jules Jul 20 '17 at 15:54
  • Another possible source of confusion: in some countries (like the UK), the walls of houses are not usually made out of wood (brick is the norm). So unless the reader knows that this story is set in a country, like the US, where wooden houses are common, they might wonder why there are 2x4s attached to the walls. – Steve Melnikoff Jul 20 '17 at 16:11
  • @Jasper in the UK a 2 x 4 rough sawn timber is exactly that size (used for studwork as it is not exposed when the wall is finished). On the other hand, PAR (planed all round) timber used for visible work such as door linings and skirtings, is approximately 1/8" less for each face that is planed. Sawn timber is cheaper than PAR because the latter requires more processing at the mill, which is why PAR is used only when visible.     @LukeSawczak -- A clarification about American dimensional lumber: "in reality you can take off half an inch from each dimension" that is nominally between 2 inches and 6 inches. (So a two-by-six is actually 1 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches.) You "take off a quarter inch from each dimension" that is nominally less than 2 inches, and "take off three-quarters of an inch from each dimension" that is nominally at least eight inches. (So a one-by-eight is actually 3/4 inch by 7 1/4 inches.) – Jasper Jul 20 '17 at 16:23

  • @WeatherVane We in the U.S. have rough cut 2x4s too, and they are exactly 2x4 inches. Unlike the UK, apparently, they are very uncommon here - mostly used for concrete form work, I think. All the stick framing I have seen, hidden or not, is with planed 2xs ("two-bys") that lose 1/2" in each dimension as described by @ Jasper. – Adam Jul 20 '17 at 16:52

    The author's use of "ran the length of the walls" to describe what are most likely typical studs (like those shown in your current image) is rather odd and non-intuitive. My instinctive assumption about any board that "runs the length of the wall" is that it is oriented horizontally. However, I think the author here must have been referring to the fact that the (vertical) studs appear at regular intervals across each wall. That's confusing to native speakers, let alone someone trying to translate! – 1006a Jul 20 '17 at 18:16

    "run the length" typically means "follows the length" but is has a second less used meaning of "found along the length." Today, we typically use the "follow the length" meaning only, but older works (and older people) will use the latter meaning more. For example, "I need fence posts that run the length of the front yard" I think it comes from a rearrangement of "I need fence posts running along the length of the front yard" So the wrong definition would have your judge thinking the wood was horizontal, when it was actually vertical along the perimeter of the wall. – Edwin Buck Jul 20 '17 at 20:40

    FYI, in the UK all goods are sold in metric sizes (usually millimetres in this case), but these are often the metric equivalent of the old imperial sizes. Thus, builders still refer to and use "two by fours", but if you were to look online for these you would actually need to look for "47mm x 100mm joists". Note that 47 mm is significantly less than two inches, and 100mm is slightly less than 4 inches. it may be that the "original two by fours" weren't exactly 2 inches wide or 4 inches high, and were actually 47 x 100mm. – Max Williams Jul 21 '17 at 13:06

There was a lot of discussion in comments under the question about whether "run the length of" could be used with 2x4 wall studs that are typically vertical. That discussion really belongs under an answer, so I'm writing this one and making it a wiki so that discussion can happen.

Most often "run the length of" is used to describe a feature that is uniform across the length of something. For example:

"Striking red and white stripes ran the length of the locomotive." (Virginia Museum of Transportation web site)

Often that feature is horizontally oriented, because vertical orientation is usually referred to as "height" not "length". However, "ran the length of" can be used with anything uniform that goes along the length of something else.

For example:

"Long slanted windows ran the length of both decks." (LZ 129 Hindenburg article, Wikipedia)

An example similar to wall studs would be "pillars" which are almost always vertically oriented:

"The room is in the shape of a half round and floor to ceiling pillars run the length of the room." (Albany Country Club web site)

Even though studs are typically vertically oriented, if they were uniformly spaced, we could use "ran the length of" but we would probably say they "ran the length of the garage" instead of "ran the length of the walls".

A clue that the "two-by-fours" might not be a neat pile against the wall is the description of "uniformity" contrasted with "clutter". The family has "crammed" a bunch of stuff into the garage and it doesn't make sense that they would neatly pile up some random lumber when all the rest of their belongings have just been dumped in a jumble. It makes more sense in this context that the author is describing the repeating structure of the exposed 2x4s in the wall.

Another clue is the use of the definite plural "the walls" rather than the singular "a/the wall" or indefinite plural "some walls" or something more specific such as "the side walls". If the sentence did indeed refer to a horizontal pile or stack of boards, this would imply that there were four such piles, one parallel to (running the length of) each wall. It's hard to imagine a reason for such an arrangement in a family's garage.

The writer is not so much describing a scene as using the scenery to make a point. In other words, the 2x4s are a contrast with the chaotic situation, not part of a discourse about the garage's construction.

We must infer the nature of the garage wall from a minimum of information. These boards "ran the length of the walls," that is, horizontal and continuous. We could also expect that the boards (plural) are attached to the walls (plural), if not a part of them. In the framing of a wall, the long boards (studs) are vertical because they are load bearing. A horizontal board is there to form a window frame or header, so it is not continuous.

It's more likely, then, that the 2x4s in question are there to support shelves or tools. Whether the wall framing is open or covered is irrelevant (although the vertical studs would tend to clutter the image). Because the items stored here have been packed, the walls will look bare, adding to the bleakness of the scene.

Due to the lack of information, other interpretations are possible. As noted, the boards could be piled against the walls, although it would seem unusual to have multiple piles in a limited space (then again, it could be a big garage). The studs may run horizontally for some reason, or the writer glossed over the fact that a row of headers looks continuous. Other possibilities are that the writer drew from her own memories and assumed the reader would have similar memories, or that she chose to make her point quickly without distracting the reader. There is not enough information to reach a firm conclusion.
