Questions referring to tropical cyclones, hurricanes or typhoons and their behavior; or how much destruction they can cause.

A tropical cyclone is another name for a large, dangerous storm that rotates inward around a low pressure system. Tropical cyclones are also known as a hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean or northeastern Pacific Ocean (around most of the Americas) or a typhoon in the northwestern Pacific Ocean near eastern Asia. The term tropical cyclone is used when they form in the South Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean. Tropic cyclones, hurricanes and typhoons are formed over the ocean and maintain their strength while over water. To form, the water temperature must be near or above 30 C. As soon as they hit land, they immediately start to loose their strength. Depending on where they reach landfall, flooding usually occurs due to the amount of rainfall associated withe the tropical cyclone. The aftermath of a cyclone can be quite serious, depending on what category it was. Cyclones can be categorized from 1 to 5. 5 being the strongest, and 1 the weakest. If a cyclone is not strong enough to be a category 1, it's called a tropical storm.
