The Oddball Couple was DePatie-Freleng Enterprises' Funny Animal take on Neil Simon's The Odd Couple, produced as a Saturday Morning Cartoon for ABC. It ran for two seasons, from 1975 to 1977.
The main characters were Spiffy, a Neat Freak cat voiced by Frank Nelson, and Fleabag, an unkempt dog voiced by Paul Winchell. As in the play and the live-action sitcom, most of the comedy came from personality clashes between Spiffy and Fleabag, but turned Up to Eleven to take advantage of the animated format.
Tropes used in The Oddball Couple include:
- The Alleged Car: At least Fleabag's half of it.
- Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: Spiffy has blue fur.
- Barefoot Cartoon Animals: Some of the supporting cast.
- Cat in White: Spiffy wears a white suit.
- Fully-Dressed Cartoon Animal: Spiffy and Goldie Hound.
- Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: Fleabag.
- No Celebrities Were Harmed/Parody Names: Goldie Hound is a Funny Animal version of Goldie Hawn.
