| Areal de răspândire | |
Ele sunt plante erbacee perene, de obicei mari, uneori parțial lemnoase. Tulpinile sunt subterane, cu rizomi. Au frunzele bazale, spiralate, mari, simple, cu păstăi mari suprapuse, cu pețiol. Frunzele sunt adesea împărțite în mai multe părți perpendiculare pe nervura principală.
